Show THE PEOPLES CAUSE ONE of the chief issues of the present local political campaign is a question involving the preservation to the majority of the few rights they have remaining or whether they shall be practically reduced to serfdom if the liberals should by any process obtain complete control of the local civil government of utah every member of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints would be franchised disfranchised dis otherwise there would be a complete change and reversal of liberal policy in support of this theory the friends of the people have cited the aid sympathy and endorsement tendered by the opposition in utah to the anti mormon politicians of idaho who have succeeded in the outrageous disfranchisement scheme by which the latter day saints in that territory have been deprived of the privilege of voting or holding office yet those ano uphold that disgraceful outrage go before the people in the present campaign and ask them to vote for their candidates this amounts to asking them to vote for their own political disability two of the liberal campaigners notably judge powers and mr P L williams ha have ve sought to throw dust in the eyes of the mormon portion of their hearers on this point alluding to the infamous idaho test oath they attempted to make it appear that it was only persons who committed certain acts prohibited bylaw by law or aided and abetted in their perpetration pet ration that were dis franchised by it such hypocritical methods are inexcusable even in the commonest order of political stump speakers they are all the more censurable as coming from attorneys at law possessing acknowledged professional ability they know and it is notoriously known that by the test oath process pro cess combined with the action of the courts in that section of the country every mormon in idaho otherwise qualified to vote and hold office has ien disqualified on the sole ground of membership in the church of jesus christ of latter day saints it is also perfectly understood der stood that having favored the ilk perpetration of that enormous wrong in idaho the liberals of utah only A need the power to put the same N proem process in operation in this terri tory they have the will and have shown it in ways too patent to ad 1 mit of any mistake regarding their 41 TJ disposition last night a new liberal aspea speaker ker a mr stephens advanced 3 the idea that a change was desir able he was candid enough to ad aj mit however that the liberals in power might not prove a blessing X to the commonwealth or a success on general principles but he plas over his doubt with theun the un j substantial theory that if they j should be found wanting they could be turned out of office turned out by whom by themselves hardly then if they should once get hold of the reins of local civil government J they would take care that it would be placed beyond the power of the honest mormons cormons Mor mons to put them out for corruption they would strip r them of the only effective weapon with which political battles can be fought the elective franchise 3 the battle ground of the peoples peopled party is the preservation of the re remnants of civil and rei legious rights and the protection of home and family no people ever had a nobler cause or one more H worthy of a determined struggle |
