Show CONNELLY cayes his plea and promise secure the courts leniency john connelly Cea Belly was in the third district court this morning he was there also at the Sept september embi term two years ago on october ath 1885 on that occasion he received sentence for violating the edmunds law by living with two wives and was given the full penalty he was again indicted for the period subsequent to his release from the penitentiary and on arraignment at the april term pleaded not guilty this In morning orning he be attended court with the intention of changing that plea and expecting to receive the leniency of the court by bv the promise he had declined to make in ISM 1885 connellis connellys Oon Con nellys case was brought up today by district attorney peters informing the court that tile the defendant was present and desired to change his plea mr connelly was then called forward and after stating that he be desired a plea of guilty to be entered the court asked do you wish to receive sentence now connelly yes air but I 1 wish to make a few remarks I 1 plead guilty though not guilty in tact fact I 1 have not been guilty since I 1 was in the penitentiary court then why do you plead guilty connelly I 1 thought it best so I 1 could settle it nitifor ifor the future though I 1 am not I 1 mean to obey the lawn the future I 1 have put away my second wife court coart when were you married to lier her connefy ln in 1879 court you state that you will it ilk the future obey the law connelly yes sir mr court you understand there is a revelation from god eem manding plural marriage do you believe that re revelation elation is genuine or spurious connelly so tar far as my conscience is concerned I 1 believe it to be correct court but bu t notwithstanding that you will not obey it connelly I 1 will not court you win will obey the laws of the united states connelly Connel lv yes sir court you say you have sent your wife away connelly yes sir court you will not hereafter teach this doctrine nor counsel or advise an anyone one to practice polygamy or unlawful ful cob cohabitation bi tation connelly no I 1 could not do that and promise to obey the law myself court you yon state then that you will obey the law of the land without making any mental qualification or reservation connelly yes sir the court then asked mr peters whether he had bad any recommendation to make and the district attorney replied that mr connelly had madette made the same statement to him that he be had bad made in court he be bad also served one term in the penitentiary mr connelly I 1 am disposed to take into consideration the circumstances of the case and the promises you have made evidently in good faith I 1 will not impose say aay imprisonment you will be fined and the costs of f the ion and stand committed ua til the fine and costs are paid mr connellis connellys Con nellys jaw dropped when the penalty was pronounced it appeared from the expression on his tace lace that it was heavier shaa he expected but there was no help for it so he be had to pay the amount |
