ber county on december I 1 alth ith made a report of their findings yesterday the re report ort of the visit toabe to the scene ot of the accident ec ident is as follows we ogden on Dece irber gild and proceeded directly to bishops on the line of the Son southern thern pacific company I 1 and sto stopped aped all night at t the he section house in the early morning accompanied com compa panted nied by james Ca cassady spady the see sec tion foreman we proceeded east to bishops bridge the scene of the accident on arriving there we made a minute investigation and obtained the necessary measurements bearing on the ahe accident to wit we found that the deceased was struck by the umbers timbers of we east end of said uridge immediately over the run board of the car knocking him back on the car f frame rame from which chica position he was shaken by the rolling of the car and chown with great violence against the west end of the bridge knocking the tini timbers tiers loose cheref rom and dropping the body to the floor of tae bridge it was carried fifty two and a halt feet from where it struck the bridge to where it 16 was found we also found from measurement that the height of the arch of the bridge from top of f rails is sixteen feet eleven inches the arch where deceased struck consists of about three and a half inches thick of timbers as follows oue one piece of inch timber running horizontally across said bridge and one inch running vertically from arch to root roof and also an outside strip one and a half inches thick all of which to together 9 ether make a thickness of three sud and ar a balf bait inches anch we found broken by the concussion and found fragments of these timbers that were hurled twenty feet from their original ori Kinal position poy illon signed formerly an em aloye of the central pacific railway conductor tracy tes testified tided divid david chugg my head bead brakeman met his death on the alth of december at 1080 10 80 am at a point two miles west of tu lasco siding 8 P K R R the train broke in two lesi leaving fing the rear part pan two miles from ake point at which the accident occurred deceased was on the forward part of the train the other brakeman brake maa and myself were on the rear or detached section which was two mies mi es from the scene of the accident I 1 did rot LO see the accident but concluded that the deceased was struck by the timbers of the bridge known as bishops creek bridge I 1 he be height of said bridge above a box car will n not ot admit ot of the brakemen doing their duty d dur ur lug the passage through said bridge the train had no air brates brakes a not unusual I 1 thing with trains I 1 cautioned deceased about the danger attending the passage of the bridge and told nim aim t at several men had bad been knocked down by reason of the bridge not being in high enough the the engineers testimony was as follows when leaving wells december alth for jarlin I 1 rlyn the caboose broke loose from the train near and a brakeman discovered it he came and told me ot of it and I 1 instructed him to let it go until we got to bishops when we would meet the no 3 passenger train and then go back forit for it ial I 1 also told him two or three times not to go on OB the top of the train until it had bad passed through the bridge as I 1 saw tie be was excited shortly after he disappeared and I 1 did not uee him any more the train oot not slowing down I 1 asked a man on the train to go out and set the brakes which he did when I 1 stopped the train a man came back and said e was no BO one oae and he thought the brakeman must mast have fallen alien off the passenger train came I 1 told the engineer to look out for olur aar missing brakeman as I 1 thought he might have got knocked d off of or had stepped off our train tn the fireman tes testified tided I 1 returned from bishops on no 3 8 engine to look for gracya head bead brakemen brakeman when a short distance from the covered bridge we saw something eythe lying ing inside of it the engineer stopped stopp the train and west went to the bridge where we lound aund the young man dead mr little testified there are three or four bridges between og den and carlla which are not of sufficient height to admit of an em aloye performing the duty of setting bra brakes e on box cars during their pas sage aage through them the timbers being only only from four to five feet from the roof of an ordinary box car five whistles are supposed to be sounded before the passage of trains through the bridges but during my time of service I 1 have only heard said rule observed once the alarm might have been sounded and not heard by me the rulea of we the company do not exempt an employed from the Pu punctual actual performance e of 0 any duty by the regulation bation whistles during the approach to or passage of trains through said bridges I 1 0 ao an autopsy was held on the remains of the vin unfortunate fortunate man and the physicians reported the following result we the undersigned undersigner under signed having made in an of the body of a ma man said to be that of david chugs chugg at abb undertaking establishment of S M Pres baw in ogden city at about 8 p m of the day of december 1887 submit herewith the followings fol lowins report to the coroner there was at the top of the head a bruised and torn wound semi semicircular circular rhular in shape and four and a lulf half inches long lone the skull from one end of the wound to the other was fractured the crack in the bone boas being one fourth inch wide enlarging the cut cat the crack was found to extend backward and forward toward the base of the be skull and was traced for thirteen thir teon inches of its course and behind two other cracks were lound found branching branchi aff from the main crack and were followed respectively lour four and one half and two inches of their course A large piece of the back part of the skull was driven in from three six teentie to one fourth of an inch brain substance was oozing through the cracks in places there were many bruises and scratches about the fac earms and legs but no indications of other fractures or injuries of any kind were evident from the external examination and no signs of disease were discovered by ion of the burlace of the body no internal exam minion exa lalon was made the wound on the
