aleye that a study of the various stages through which a country passes in the course of its development can never fill fail to be of interest and importance to the thoughtful mind the multiple changes chances which such a country experiences are as varied as wonderful and as awe inspiring as the mystical meta which are undergone by the latent seed as it awakens from it Us s slee sleep of towns and well ordered villages Til lages in place of the indian camp sod and the savages the herd hoys song and the milkmaids milk maids ditty are heard instead of the DRATH TELLING WAR WAK WHOOP the wondrous adeland the miners pick hive have supplanted the tomahawk the bear an and the wolf forgetting their hostile and carni carnivorous verous nature have fled fed before our horses and cattle to the most inaccessible heights of these sentinel hills bills in place of ehe deadly rattle of the ve venomous nemous reptile my ear catches the hum of bees and the bleating of sheep the vultures shriek and the ravens raven a croak are sl silenced by the merry crowing of the chanticleer and the chirping and cooing of our birds of civilization besides these I 1 hes bear r other sounds which seem to have had bad no representation in our earlier history they are rather additions than substitutions listen to the merry treble of a thousand looms and spindles chording with the deep and soul stirring bass voices of these horses that feed on fire aud and steam with hoofs of iron and ribs of steel rushing through our land with their treasures of food and dress of coal and rock and metal and of freight far more precious than all such traveling as was seen in the prophetic tic vision of one of old WITH SPEED SWIFTLY ud and hissing bissing as they come and to this wondrous melody thousands of our hearty artisans and aad sturdy tillers atthe soil beat true perfect and pow with sledge and axe chisel audilet ma mallet with ho hoe and with prong and chiming lining ab with all imparting a 1 sweetness which otherwise would be unimaginable I 1 hear the voices of children at school of students and thir their teachers at prayers prayers ers but at times as isit entranced in the contemplation of such majestic melody of such holy harmony of blessed and savored javore ro gress my eye is omit en ik by bv the faintest intimation of hill timed almed note that savors savers of a dis ard rd and I representation and dt df visible parables let us seek a fitting symbol of the prevailing spirit of utah and people today to day what can be more appropriate prop than the figure of a stately pure lovely or let rae me say lovable woman so let it be and sir air draw in tile the lore rounel of my picture a female form of perfection let the face be natural and character speaking and I 1 pray you avoid with the strictest care that smirk of fashion that affectations smile that hollow mockery of expression which seems to be oftener mistaken for beauty the lineaments linea ments of the count countenance eh must bespeak fervor and modesty thankfulness for the past and trust for the future and unfaltering reliance on the voice of GOD AUTHORITY and an unswerving trust in the goodness rf of one common father let the eyes be lustrous land bright indicative of purity in thought and ana action the dress must be simple and graceful and withal the workmanship of her own hands and now there is a feature in our picture which I 1 would gladly neglect but the completeness of the ism would be marred thereby ISO so draw for me peering out from the shady covert of of shrub and tree ot of vine and fig with wanton eyes fixed on the fair maid the semblance of a man the countenance bespeaks greed and avarice a licentious desire and libertine propensities the expression reveals the thoughts of the heart which are these surely she shall finally tall fall a victim to my arts and intrigues tri aes ues i she must be humiliated and defiled I 1 such stich is my picture of the p present condition of our land and its people men of utah this is NO TIME for SLOTH let us be awake to the possibilities of our surroundings and may we never forget that the utah of the future is to be the child of utah as it is |
