ONCE UPON A JUDITH VANIER Wizardry of Words By Judith Vanier Words hold a certain hidden and almost magical power. They adapt to many unique contexts as well as they adapt to different personalities expressing themselves. Poetry and metaphor show how full of sensary energy .words or combinations of words can be in communicating ideas. Take, for instance these interesting phrases: The fog crept in on cat's or The Lord is my shepard. Those paw silence phrases drip with stimulating imagery. But what really catches my attention is the reason we chose to express ideas with certain words as opposed to other words. For example why do we use the word death instead of unbirthing, or the word "destroy rather than unbuild, or the word divorce rather than unwed. The words death, "destroy, and "divorce all have heavy emotional un- and "unbuilding" unbirthing, charging while wedding leave the listener unprovoked but still informed. Stimulating that certain emotional twitch in others seems to be the very reason people chose to express themselves with emotionally loaded words. In short, the desire to manipulate other peoples emotions makes us select such words. Recently, the news media people have picked up a new word and have been very busy exploiting emotions with it. The word cult is the word Im referring to as enjoying so much undeserved attention The very use of the word draws to mind the image of the "Jones Town mass suicides and murders. Ones body recoils at hearing the word "cult because media makers wedded the word to the nightmarish story and almost made it synonymous to every evil associated with the incident Now, if the news reporters want to provoke us into a mindless reaction, all they have to do is mention the word cult " I for one, however, do not appreciate being emotionally jerked around by media managers who have no nobler intent than to sell a few more issues of news print or to hang onto their TV ratings. In order to free ourselves from word manipulation we must first discern the motives of most speakers. Reporters, or unconsciously politicians and , clergy deliberately stimulate their audiences with emotionally charged words. They want to push Mirbutttmfc,so to speak, and get,, a $ desired response V ,, Politicians adore irritating the public with over worked emotionally loaded phrases. Lately, Ted Kennedy would have us believe that we are lurching from crisis to crisis" under the Carter administration and lurching from and lurching from crisis to crisis." The crisis to crisis" real crisis I see here is the definite lack of creativity in speech Let us take an unemotional look at the word cult and see the real nature of the word and not the emotional flap reporters would have us focus upon at their whim According to the dictionary, cult" means: the pursuit of, or devotion to, some cause; or a system of religious worship. Now tell me what doesnt fit into one of those categories Christianity fits the definition along with Buddhism, Hinduism, Mormonism, Catholicism and democracy definitely is a devotion to a cause along with socialism and a host of other "isms . even ecology reflects a devotion to a cause We could say that the nursing mothers of America are a cult they're dedicated to the breast feeding of babies As long as we ourselves fall into the unhealthy habit of stirring the pot of feelings with emotionally charged words in our daily conversations, we will easily become victimized ourselves by others. Experimenting with new ways of expression with friends and family leads to interesting insights m communication. Talking about the unbirthing of someone almost never brings a tear to another person's eye and that may be precisely why we chose to go on using the word death" instead Death is so deadly sounding . something you can get your emotions into We could also talk about the un- forming" of things rather than their destruction"' or we could talk about high scoring" at the game rather than beating" someone. I hope that the next time you hear a reporter seriously talking about this ' cultist" group or that, that you give yourself a knowing little smile and teasingly say, Yes, rm dear friend, and how goes your cult today still devoted to manipulating the news?" ... -- .
