Lancers to field competitive team in tournament Despite a slow start on the cage season, due to annual success on the gridiron, the Layton Lancers shouldnt be considered out of the Region One cage race. We wont win it, said Coach Doug Moon, But well be very competitive once the kids get comfortable playing with each other." Layton is one of the sue Davis County high schools participating this week in the Davis County Holiday Basketball Invitational at Clearfield and Bountiful. Last year was a banner season for the Lancers, probably the finest season in their history. The team finished coach Moon-le- d fourth in the state losing only to Orem in the state tournament. Layton has only one returning starter, which is surprisingly more than what most Region One teams have this season. That starter is Dave Burke, whose football heroics are more widely known than his feats on the basketball court. The only two other returning letterman are Stan Owens ana Mark Lee. The Davis County tournament is a great idea. Who ever it was thinking great things, said Moon. The lancer coach was enthused about his teams participation within the con-ciev- tourney. Start Four Seniors been starting four a the in ion with seniors He Burke leading the pack. Moon has pre-se- hates to lose, is very competitive on defense and is very quick. Hes a coach on. the floor and will provide much of the leadership for us, said Moon. And if Dave doesn't score the points, then Mark Lee probably Lee has will. In averaged 23 points per game. If he stays free from foul trouble hell be a big plus for Layton. Stan Owens, center, has averaged 10 to 12 rebounds in preseason and has netted about that many points or more. Hes a tough competitor, said Moon. Mark Vigil, who quarterbacked the football team in the fall, will try on a basketball uniform this winter and try to help Moon. Vigil did not play basketball last f as season, so the year Bonneville to battle with Sky the 80 title while his team and the other two teams, Gearfield and Roy will fight for the fourth, fifth and sixth place slots. View for This is Moons ninth year at Layton and sixteenth year overall of coaching. Prior to coming to Layton, Moon coached six years at Vernal. That's a long time. It seems every year you begin another year, you say this is your last. But once the season starts and watching kids excell, something compells you to stay with it, said Moon. pre-seaso- n, 6-- 3 lay-of- most people would think, would probably hurt him. Notso, said Moon, Mark is a great athlete, who with time, will be a great basketball player for us this winter. Three more Layton players who should be standouts in league play and should see some action in this tournament are Layne Sackett, 1 junior forward; Jim Siekiera, 1 sailor forward; and John Sill, a 6--0 senio.' forward. Everyone is pointing at Sky View to take our league and I have to agree with them. They were consolation champs last year and return a lot of people from that squad, commented Coach Moon.
