Show Sporfstacular October 11. 1979 Page 13 Hi mmsFk dfossim'ft by Keith Duncan Being a first year head football coach can be the greatest thing in the world or perhaps even the worst. Hal Lewis, however, the first-yementor at Weber High, may be finding the middle hallway. Before the disappointing loss to Layton last Friday on the Warriors grid iron, the team sported a 4 record but somehow had managed to score more total points in five games than what the opponents had totaled. The thrashing by Layton will change those figures but still a story is uncovered. We were disappointed with our start here at Weber but not discouraged by it. The kids were ar 1-- 40-1- 8 slow in responding where we expected them to pick things up much foster. I think I made a mistake as a coach by dumping too much on them too sson. In our early ballgames indecision as to a limited number of plays or a limited selection left too many options. Our kids were a little hesitant and made some bad choices and we as coaches made some bad choices. When we started realizing it and dosing things down we got progressively better, said Lewis. The Warriors have had their nicks and bumps like everyone else around the region. The loss of Kip Johnson, however, was the most serious thing. We hated to lose Kip, not only because of his great talent on the field, but because of the enthusiasm he generated out there. Kips collarbone is mending fast and hopefully we can get him back in two or three weeks so he can finish the season with us, said 1111 tiafl TOftSi? Lewis. He felt confident about attitude and the unity. teams Probably the most consistent part of our team has been with the interior offensive linemen. Dave Wade, Andre Malan, Pat Jamison, Dick Viera, Bob Keel, and either Joe Oram or Scott Burden at the strong tackle have been most consistent. Neil Miller and Kory Kennington have been very sound at tight end. Lewis is not looking past the state playoffs to next year. The setback by Layton doesnt help Webers chances for a state playoff berth, but they still think positive. If we deserve to be said there, well be there, we feel Lewis, If we end confident we might be there. 9 and 7 Losing is no fUn at all. Lewis felt the Warrior players had character in coming back each week and 3-- 2, 12-1- 5, 14-1- 6, 14-1- 0-- finally beating Roy, 28-Theres a lot of pride here, he said. 7. Viera Speaks Offensive lineman, Dick Viera, is also confident, despite all the close defeats, You can really tell what kind of team youve got in practice. If you mope around all week and dont give it everything youve got, then go out Friday and try to be a superstar, it doesnt work. Our guys came back each week and well have to come back more after the loss to Layton. We know we are a good football team, said Viera. Coach Dave Brooks, who takes a great deal of pride in his defense at Weber, feels confident that the players know what the coaches expect now. Finally the kids are believing in the system that Coach Lewis has brought to Weber and were going to win with it. Were doing more things and doing things much better than in the past. About losing those close ballgames at the first of the season, I believe very well that our kids knew what was going on. They came to practice knowing they were just a shot away from winning. If wed been beaten 44-- 0 in those games, it would have been a lot different, said Brooks. Top photo NO QUESTION that the Weber Warriors are a much better team than their THERE IS record indicates. Head Coach Hal Lewis still feels 1- the team has a shot at the state playoffs. WEBER RUNNINGBACK is down by Layton defender. The Lancers blasted the Warriors, 40-- 8. brought . 1 |
