The Tafoyas, a Mexican-America- n family of our community, are industrious, ambitious and proud. Even in their busy schedules in athletics and every day living, all of the older boys have part-tim- e jobs to themselves and buy their own clothes. Their a native of Ogden, is a Customer Service Representative at Utah Power and Light, and is raising her boys with no outside financial help. She is a proud woman and refuses to accept assistance to raise her family though it could be hers for the asking. The older Tafoya boys are all wide receivers on their respective teams, while little brother Mike plays about every position on his team. Each of diem plays on defense on his individual team. On Thursday of last week, the entire family was at Roy High School, watching Ben in action with the Royal sophomore team, but on Saturday, there were four little league games on the agenda. Wayne played the early game at Layton, David also played at 9 a.m., but at Roy's North Park. Shane traveled with his team, that morning, to Brigham City for a 10: 15 game while Mike was scheduled for the same time in a game at Sand Ridge Park. What do you do when you have games to watch all over Davis, Weber, Cache and Box Elder Counties? I asked Mrs. Tafoya. Well, she smiled, I have some great brothers who help keep track of my boys, and I watch as many games as possible. Do you worry about your boys getting banged up? football can be a rugged After all, I reasoned, f game. Sure I worry, she admitted. Maybe I worry more, because football is all we talk about at this time of year, but so far there havent been any serious injuries. I talked with four W.F.F.L. coaches and the Roy sophomore coach about the Tafoya footballers they coach. Filbert Quintana has Mike on his 75 pound B team. Mike is very coachable and dependable, said the coach. I can count on him if the play comes over his position. Shane, though only ten years old, plays on Chuck Smiths 90 A team. He is turning into a real good ball player," confided Coach Smith. I play A him both ways. Coach Lyle Evans credits David for 110 percent effort on his 105-- team, and describes him as an excellent blocker on defense, with good hands on offense. Wayne has played for three years for Pete Goff, and Was named defensive player of the year two years running. He is leading pass receiver this year, and plays defensive corner back for me, said Pete. He will be star at Sand Ridge, next year, he predicted. A iti,y High School, sophomore coach Dan Sheffer desoiUd Ben Tafoya as Giving everything hes got, and he wants to give more. Coach Sheffer went on to say that Ben is a starter, both ways, and has excellent hands for catching the ball. He has speed and agility to handle the defensive the coach. half-bac- position, too, concluded k A Roy can be proud of the likes of the Tafoyas and what they have contributed to the athletic programs in town. Those five young men have gone through years of athletic endeavors in little league, and they have just begun. They will yet be heard from as they move up through junior and senior high school, and beyond. I love Roy and the great athletic programs made available to my boys, said Pristene Tafoya. The people here are great, and I owe so much to the coaches who have helped my boys. Roy is my town, she said, with a wistful look in her eye. 3rt -- (right) and her five football clad sons.
