The Mitch Wilcox coached Roy team features Tom Nigon (64) at center, Darren Cutler C4) at forward, Mike Harris (60) at forward, Reed Newey (60) and Ryan Bluemell (54) at the guard spots. Coach Wilcox usually plays eight or ten men in most games. Four of his starters have been averaging 12 points per game in a balanced attack. The price will not change unless action is taken by the legislature. A bill to increase hunting and fishing license fees will be considered during the 1980 Utah State Legislature budget session. Clair Huff, operations director for the Division of Wildlife Resources says, The proposed increase in fees is necessary if the Division is to continue to provide present services. The bill would increase the Utah combination license from $18 to $31, the adult fishing license from $8 to $15 and the adult small game license from $6 to $12. All other licenses would also be increased. One dollar from each resident hunting license would fund the hunters education program throughout the state. Another proposal in the bill would add 50 cents as the license agents handling fee. Utah hunting and fishing licenses have increased only four times in the last 43 years. Roy falls 53 - 50 record, the Lancers arent that bad. They have good talent on their team and they came to Roy to play ball. On the other hand, the Royals were ripe for a plucking. They had just broken a school record by scoring 95 points against Kearns, and as a team, they were beginning to look impressive. While Layton was up for the game, Roy was flat. Coach Ted Smith did everything to get his men going, but the first quarter momentum propelled the Lancers to their best ball game of the season. The Lancers matched the Royals in rebounding, but kept them off the offensive boards, and that may have been the difference. Both teams had 23 rebounds, but Roy committed 22 turnovers to only 12 for Layton, and the Lancers shot 50 per cent from the field, compared to 45 per cent for Roy. Layton hit 23 field goals to 21 for Roy and converted 7 of 9 from the line to 8 of 13 for the Royals. Layton's Mark Lee was the leading scorer on the floor with 18 points and Dave Burke had 12. For Roy, three men scored in double figures; Bert Rich hit six from the field and 3 for 4 from the stripe for 15 points,, Rylan Weidemeir scored a dozen points, and Dennis Adams made 5 field goals for ten points. So Roy opened its league play with a dissappointing loss at home, but there will be better days. Sky View and Bonneville were also favored in their opening games but lost in upsets against Weber and Clearfield. In high school basketball, anything can happen, and usually does. The Royals now must take the long journey to Sky View country, and remember the Bobcats had been picked as best in Region One. Their loss to Weber should make them more determined to beat the Royals. Roy really has its hands full, this week, in Smithfield. Coach Ted Smith was dissappointed in his opener at home. Friday, but he is a scrapper. Hell have his Royals ready to pick up the pieces and go from here. |
