Dale Hibbert, Layne Christensen, Mike ' Bswves am Mike Hall took over the reigns of the Bountiful High basketball program last year and no one could complain about the way he brought the Braves back into contention for some kind of title. He played a bunch of juniors which is very evident with nine returning letterman dotting the roster. Those juniors may really make the payoff this season. Its been a banner year already for Bountiful athletic programs with the football team capturing the 3A state football title. Those football players who like to wear in the winter should a tank-to- p for make a big difference Coach Hall. Bountiful got off to a 0 start n this by beating Pleasant Grove, Spanish Fork and BriOghton. Their first two loses came at the hands of East and Davis. To open the First Annual Davis County Basketball Tournament, Bountiful will take on the Layton Lancers in their brand new gym. The new Bountiful facility will house half of the tournaments first two days of action. Were not quite where we want to be, said Hall, But we have all the tools to be a great basketball team. The Braves do have what it takes to win in high school, being blessed with quickness and a big height advantage. One player, Danny Bell, a 4 due to junior, will not play in a back injury he sustained last 3-- pre-seaso- 6-- 79-8- 0 am ffimsflU year. The last five games, Hall has been attempting to find a good combination that will carry his team through a rough and tumble Region Five. Davis County fans may see a lot more of that during the tournament. Jimmy Hill is in a long list of quick little guards in the state, he being a big asset for Coach Hall. Jeff Bradford, 1 guard, is one of the finest guards in the state. Hes one of the best Ive ever coached, said Hall. Scott Rampton, a 0 guard, didnt play last year because of a broken foot but is back and healthy again this year. Then comes the football players. Take first Jim Perkins, a 1 extra quick guard, who will lead many of the Braves fast breaks. Frank Sessions is another, 5 forward. One that is not a football player is thin but good shooting, Dale Hubert who stands senior Layne Christensen, a forward, has been excellent on defense. Clark Mabey was the states MVP football player in 3A football and will be a plus on the basketball court. 5 Brad Jacox, was a walk on to last years JV team and later started in those games. Now he is fighting for a starting spot on the Braves varsity team. Tough League 6-- 6-- 6-- 6-- 185-pou- 6-- 7. 6-- 4 6-- Woodbury, Clark Mabey. Frank Sessions and Alien Meldrum. Back row, (I. to r.) Brad Hawkins, Mike Hall and Mike Evans. There is irjszjpsitilfo sgjaiim no doubt in my mind, that like football, the state champion in most 3A sports is going to come from Region Five. The competition is just plain stiff. The Davis County schools are tough when they play Hall claimed many old rivalries will be rekindled while many new rivalaries will be started in an intense way. together and of course the Salt Lake schools have always been powerhouses. Hall, along with Craig Hansen of Clearfield and Mike Gardner of Bountiful High 79-8- 0 Davis were primarily responsible for getting the Davis County tournament off the ground. He was happy the way the first night matchups went. Each game sees a 4A and 3A school battling each other the first night. Roster |
