Show - ,,,r.3 S V - Sportstocular- - Ihursday, October 25, 1 979 Pag by Keith Duncan Linebacker Bill Grilz got his big shot and the Weber State junior made the best of it,- just ask Northern -- Arizona. For a decade that has been filled with flying-hig- h football memories, Grilz would just as soon forget the start of the 1979 Wildcat football season. Against Northern Arizona though, the 210 pound linebacker may have turned the corner to bigger and better things, at least hed like to think so. Grilz transferred to Weber State this fall from Golden West Junior College. With two years of solid JC experience the future appeared more than bright in a small city nestled up in the Rockies. Personality differences thwarted his efforts in the beginning but after his part in helping Weber trounce NAU, hed be the first now to forget the past. I believe weve got the talent to win here at Weber, said Grilz. Its just putting it all together. We finally accomplished that 1st Saturday. Grilz learned many of the defensive traits he uses on Big Sky foes at Golden West. Last season his team' claimed the conference championship with Grilz being named the outstanding defensive player of the conhonors and later ference. He earned All American. was mentioned as a second-teaGrilz attended Fountain Valley High School, which is the second largest high school in the nation. Playing middle guard and offensive guard, Grilz earned every award possible before moving onto junior college. Most of die credit for getting me involved in athletics has to go to my dad, Dick, who lives in Las Vegas. He's always supported me who ran track Dave Sanchez, my brother-in-lafor UCLA, was always one to keep me going also, said recovered a fumble that set up one Wildcat score against Northern Arizona. Things are only going to get better for everyone, said Grilz, I love my position and Im pleased with the the track. The best thing I did was go to a junior college. I'll always be indebted to Coach Ray Shackleford, our head coach and Coach Don Rowe. Those guys would have done anything far us. In high school it was two coaches that pushed me along and gave me a chance to excell. A lot of credit has to go to Mike Milner aiid Jim Cowen, said Grilz. m Grilz. Conflicts Stunt Progress Conflicts with coaches stunted Grilz progress with the Wildcats in die early going. Despite die inatdifferences, Grilz still loved the small-tow- n mosphere Ogden had to offer, the mountains and the fishing and hunting that went with them. He stuck it out and struck it rich last Saturday. Weber Change Major to Business Grilz plans on majoring in business with hopes of someday helping his father in one of die businesses hes involved in. I also plan on minor ing physical education. Whatever Im involved in, I like die idea of being able to coach some kids, noted Grilz . My father is an avid fan of mine and spends a lot of .money coming to see me play. He attended the BYU game and plans on seeing a few more, he said. My mom also enjoys seeing me play, even though she doesnt understand the game totally. Country music and horseback riding are tww favorite past times this WSC junior enjoys. One of the big reasons I came to Weber was the mountains. Fishing and hunting enable me to get my mind off a lot of things, said Grilz. Family Closeness I came to Weber to succeed, not just for myself, but for my family. I know that the things I do here will inspire my younger brothers and sisters to do well if I do well. Ive got a little brother living in Wisconsin with my mother who should be a super player someday. He is already as big as me. My example is going to influence him a lot. Since the divorce in our family when I was younger, Ive grown close to my six brothers and sisters, each had something to do with my being here today, reported Grilz.
