Show LOMOND BEACON BEN drivers education. Mr. Salvo says thanks to people of Utah who have helped to shape that original personality and have made his life in the western state, something like heaven. Mr. Salvo is one of many who make up the backbone of athletics in the history of Weber High School. That could never have been if it wasnt some friends back in 1946 that talked him into coming back to Utash to go to school and perhaps live. The 1946 stint to Utah was a stop made while serving in the armed forces and being stationed at Hill Air Force Base. Paul did get back to New Jersey, but it wasnt long before he was back in the midst of the Rockies and leading into a coaching career that would change his life. But never fail, there isn't a year goes by that Paul and his family do not go back to New Jersey to see his parents and family. The committment to family and friends has payed off for the former Weber High mentor. With the death of his father recently, Mr. Salvo is thankful for the committment he made to see his parents each year. After his return to Utah in to 1947, Salvo commensed work on the railroad until a teaching position opened at Washington Junior High. He worked with Harry Burchell as a basketball and baseball coach. Not long after, Salvo began memorable career at Weber High, first starting out as the head baseball coach an assistant to Mel Wood ini football and Floyd Slater in basketball. The following year he was appointed as head coach in basketball, where for the next 10 years he would enjoy experiences that children and grandchildren would talk about for years to come. Those case teams were to capture a few region championships and many were involved in state playoffs. Salvo was once interviewed by A1 Warden of the Standard Ogden Examiner and was asked which of all the teams hed coached, was his best. The reply was not in haste, but was voiced with authority, that no team was greater than the other. I felt it unfair to compare teams. They were all good. One year we would have better competition and the next year something else, each was great in their own way, Salvo pointed out. Salvo can recall games in which he came out very Droud and still other that he was embarassed, pointing out games they had no business winning. I always told the kids, to just do their best with what they had. I never wanted to use the word death that performed on one team one year. Gordie Stratford, Jimmy Wise and Jimmy Harrop were those players. such feelings get deep when it comes to the Harrop family. He coached three Harrop brothers, which is a story within itself. Needless to say, his career as a coach was colorful as a mentor over the Harrops. Presently, Salvo serves as a coordinator with junior high athletics in Weber County. Bruce Griffen is his superior. As one who works day in and day out with teenagers and smaller children, Salvo never forgets a few sayings. Some go like this: When a child has done his best, If angels can do no better. theres a problem, what do A) Whose at you say, fault? or B) How can I Tell me, I forget; help? Show me, I remember; and Involve me, I understand. Athletics have been his life and those were his words. Paul Salvo is the kind of man who feels hes indebted to everyone, but many are deeply indebted to him. beat terms. and other Coaching is a vital position. It's not something to take for granted, he said. The memories are in- but one that stands out clearer than most would be in his first year as the Warrior coach. In the first game, Weber played and lost to Jordan by 45 points. On ihe bus, as the team rode home that night, Coach Salvo got up from his seat and asked the team to come back to practice that very night. He instructed them to ask their parents and get their voice of approval before coming back. That evening they practiced till 11 p.m. The next game was dropped to South by 35 points, but Salvo insists his troops were dedicated. The following week they lost to Tooele by 25 and after the contest, one official commented after a heated confrontation that Weber was the worst thing to hit a basketball The floor. Warrior playets heard and remembered the comment. The gesture by the official only seemed to stimulate them. Weber surprised and took third in the region. In the first game of the state tournament, Weber met the same South team theyd lost to by 35 points earlier. This time it was only by four points and that left Tooele and Weber pitted in the next round. Tooele was that numerable, same team that had slaughtered the Warriors and the game in which the had official nastily remarked. Weber glided to lead and went on to an beat Tooele by some 25 points. Weber won the state consolation title that year. 11-- 0 That was the highlight of my career. Ive had many other teams that were better but that team will never leave my memory. Coach Salvos parents were not excited about their being involved in athletics as a youngster. Hed have to sneak his baseball glove in his pants and pretend to them he was on his way to church. During a game as a youngster, Paul was spiked on the arm and required eight stitches. The excuse when he got home was an accident with a whiskey bottle. But later in the school God-gifte- the year, yearbook publicized the sports-relate- d accident and mom and dad could only chuckle over the incident.
