That guy is super and his program is great. They may have been looking a bit past us tonight, but I know for sure were in for a heck of a contest down to our place. I have all the respect in the world for Conolly, hes one of the best in the business, commented By Keith Duncan Confused and frustrated, that was a Weber High fan after last weekends shocking loss to Viewmont High m the Region One opener. The Vikes were not ones to allow dull moments to live and they promptly upset the Warriors 8 m what could be called the first major upset of the brand new season. Coach Dick Conolly and his troops filed to the dressing room, somewhat dejected after the surprise put on by Viewmont, and after a team regrouping that evening, you know theyll be back. Coach Ron Johansen and his jubilant Vikes could hardly contain the joy We really didnt expect to win, we were scared of Weber coming into the contest. Coach Conolly scares me to death, I still feel theyll win the region championship, said Johansen. We simply ran things the way we wanted them to go. Thpts the first time this season weve ran the four corner offense and it worked brilliantly We had planned to get a lead early and controll the ball and that just the way the kids ran it, Im proud of them 65-5- Johansen A Doug Day jumper early in the first lead, a quarter gave Viewmont a lead they managed to hold on to the rest of the evening Thats the guy that hurt us, said Van Fuller, a reserve forward for the Warriors in reference to Day of the Vikings Day pumped in 14 points and was the leading rebounder for Viewmont. Mark Montgomery, who led all scorers with 17 points, got five of points in the opening stanza He and teammates Brad Hall and Max Jones were the only other Warriors to score m the first period. 5--4 Brad Thacker helped the Viewmont four corner offense tremendously with his deadly outside shooting He pumped m the final 6 points for Viewmont in the first period and helped give his team a 6 first quarter advantage Thacker ended the evening with 16 points, tops for Viewmont. A freethrow by Rick Scadden helped pull Weber within tw o poinis of the hot 19-1- shooting Vikings, 25-2- midway through the second period That was the closest that Weber came the rest of the evening Viewmont enjoyed varied success with a full court zone press. something they applied the entire game throughout Bruce Thorpe picked up two personal fouls in the second quarter which frustrated Webers chances to make an t comeback. Fuller, Dwight Allen, Ralph Anderson and Drew Skeen all saw varsity action in who of starters replacement developed into foul trouble A short Downs jumper with 27 seconds left in the first half gave the visiting Vikings a edge at halttime At halftime the Warriorettes charmed the crowd with a special Christmas routine and some specially made attire Inside the lockeroom, Weber was trying to regrop and Viewmont was trying to figure out what they were doing so right. Bernie Yocu , an official who rested at halftime, comViewmont couldnt miss, mented, but Weber will come back. Well the Warriors did come back, but it was too late when they did A Scadden jumper and three more points by Montgomery helped pull Weber to within four points, w'lth a minute remaining m the third period But before the Weber outburst, the Vikes shot out past their counterparts and were up by as much as 12 points in the beginning of the period Jim Miller did most of damage for Viewmont. Reserve forward, Dwight Allen, entered the third quarter midway and promptly pumped in five straight points for Weber. all-ou- 36-2- 8 46-4- 2 How Do They Stand ? Viewmont widened their third on a Miller jum period lead to per. Weber commensed the final period with all the regulars starting the quarter. But it was just 41 seconds later that Bruce Thorpe fouled out and Conolly was forced to substitute. Skeen entered and hit Webers first two points of the final quarter. Viewmont was as stubborn as ever in the final quarter and frustrations only seem to mount for the Weber team and their fans Consecutive baskets by Skeen, Scadden, and Hall helped but bring Weber to within four, fouls by Scadden and Hall on the other end of the court allowed Miller and Hansen of Viewmont to put through four killer freethrows that gave Viewmont the game and their impressive upset victory. Viewmont shot 86 per cent from the freethrow line, converting 19 of 22 attempts. Weber on the other hand managed only 10 of 17 freethrows for 58 per cent. The Royals had several turnovers and also had trouble penetrating the Lancer defense. The ball was kept away from Mark Sindle who had only 9 points for the evening. Coach Smith concluded the only bright spot was Fred Fernandes hitting 19 points Roy hit 13 of 23 freethrows and Layton was more accurate hitting, 19 of 25 The Royals havent played well together, yet this season, according to Coach Smith He was quoted as saying that in all his coaching career at Roy, he's never entered a season in which he has been so ill prepared and confused about a right combination. But look out when the Royals find that combination! Skyview got off to a great start in whipping Bountiful in the second half and taking a win. The Bobcats were behind at halltime, but Todd Evans got hot and paced his team onto victory Stevens leads the league in scoring with a 31 0 average. It was only Skyviews third game of the season and Coach Kenny Thompson was leary going into the contest.
