Show I BEN f LOMOND BEACON, Dec. 1 4, 1 978, Page 4 Warriors slip past Tigers, in overtim By quarter lead That kind of scoring was the story the rest of the evening Max Jones turned in a brilliant Keith Duncan Region Tuning up for the 1978-7One cage battles, Weber High gave the home town crowds something to overtime get excited about, a victory over a stubborn Orem High crew The contest was Webers final preseason game and the victory left the h Warriors with a 1 mark It was the third win at nome for Weber, something that is hopefully indicative of the upcoming Region One season In other action that involved Region One schools last weekend, Clearfield kept it's record perfect with a big win over the defending state champions, Bingham High Russell Florence and Roger Vincent, two of the Falcons big men, have been the top guns for Clearfield all 9 second half, both m scoring and on the defensive side His 10 points proved to be a big difference, especially his four treethrows in the overtime setting 67-6- 3 4-- Scadden sustained a bruised ankle in the Orem contest and sat out the entire second half, soaking the ankle pre-seaso- in ice Dwight Allen, Van Fuller, Kevin Jensen, and Ralph Anderson were Coach Dick Connolys primary substitutes Anderson has seen plentiful action m play, playing the guardline for Weber Jensen helped fill in for the injured Scadden while both Allen and Fuller have been big assets among the big men Orem stayed even with the Warriors in the second stanza, both teams notching 16 points Orems McMullin was effective both from the outside and underneath m supplying the extra scoring punch for the Tigers He ended up with a game-hig- h of 20 points McMullin could have had a more productive evening, but had to cope with the tough defense put on by Webers Hall Brad was stingy on defense and on offense scored in every period except the overtime stanza in helping the Warriors on to their fourth win He was in double-figure- s in the rebound column also Hall ended the game with 19 points and the pre-seas- pre-seas- extended their Roy pre-seaso- n record to 4 1 with an easy win over Alta and Olympus The Royals did get behind 14-- 0 against Olympus, but after regrouping the Roy team became unbeatable Roy opens its Region One schedule against Layton this Friday Viewmont High, opens the Region One schedule with Weber this Friday time is in the Warriors gym Tip-oslated for 7 30 A couple of long jumpers by Rick Scadden, a smooth jumper by Brad moves by Hall, and some snake-lik- e Mark Montgomery for a couple of baskets helped Weber to a 2 first ff 14-1- leader among Weber. Hall shot nearly 50 per cent from the field while enjoying one of this best showings As a whole Weber shot 53 per cent from the field and 68 per cent from the line Montgomery, Hall, and Jones helped pace Weber in the third quarter, but the Tigers were just as tough and Weber still managed to hold on to their slim lead, 4240 Orem took the lead and what seemed command of the game with just two minutes remaining, but a couple of key layins from Montgomery and Jensen helped bring the Warriors back into the thick of things 7 Wlth the score for Weber, Orems Louder stepped to the line with no time remaining to put through two freethrows that send the game mto overtime non-leag- v - 1 1 Tt r try; 59-5- Coach Joel Gardner had called with just eight seconds prior to the clutch freethrows. Tip-of- f time is slacd for 7 30 p m First year head coach, Ron Johansen leads the Vikings Coach Johansen has spent the last seven years at the school and now enters his eighth year at Viewmont He is tally on iiS r originally from Huntsville and goes hack each summer to farm there He knows a little bit about Weber basketball! Viewmont posted a 2 4 mark in preseason. The Vikings were winners ov er Oly mpus, 75-6and Soda Springs, 96 77. The Vikings other contests were rough scheduled games with Brighton, Orem, Skyline, and Wood Cross. Viewmont lost only by a point to a tough Orem High team After playing Weber this week the Vikings will open their home season with Clearfield coming to town Brad Thacker, a senior, has been the leading scorer for Viewmont, but not by much. Teammates, J.m Miller, Kelly Downs, Doug Day, and junior Paul Hansen have all been in double figures in past contest.
