Show UTAH LABOR NEWS. SALT LAKE CITY. UTAH. DECEMBER 16. 1938 7 Page OGDEN, THE EAST GROWING CITY, INVITES YOU FOR CHRISTMAS TelegraphlCable company in the petitions. WPA AND NYA WORKERS TO GET CHECKS t United States was ordered here by Montana cases, of which 26 27 IN TIME FOR HOLIDAYS Approximately a million WPA and NYA workers who normally would be paid immediately after Christmas or New Years day will receive a pay check by December 24 or 31, Works Progress Administrator Harry L. Hopkins announced Saturday. This has been assured, he said, through a rescheduling of project work and through arrangements with the Treasury and Post Office Departments to expedite wage payments. In a telegram sent to all state WPA and NYA directors, Mr. Hopkins ordered that working hours should be rescheduled, to permit delivery by December 24 of all checks normally delivered through December 26, and to permit delivery by December 31 of all checks normally delivered by January 2. Thus an estimated million project workers will receive more than $20,000,000 with which to share, with their families, in the traditional festivities of the season. Normally, each work day in the week is a payday for some group of WPA or NYA workers. This is done to prevent the congestion which would result from issuing moe than 3,000,000 checks on the 1st and 15th of the month, the conventional paydays for government employes. By rescheduling work and expediting payments due immediately after the holidays, it is estimated that almost a third of all project workers will receive a preholiday check. State officials were further instructed to afford workers full opportunity to make up all allowable lost time so that they might receive the maximm pay to which they are entitled. teleThe text of Mr. Hopkins follows: gram All state Works Progress administrators and state Youth directors are to allow WPA and NYA project employes every reasonable opportunity to secure wake payments prior to Christmas and New Years. Working hours should be rescheduled to permit delivery by December 24 of all checks normally delivered through December 26 and to permit delivery by December 31 of all checks normally delivered by January 2. Wherever possible should permit workers to make up any allowable lost time. Arrangements have been made with Treasury accounts and disbursing offices to c&mply with these schedules. Due to congestion in the mails, delivery of checks may be slower than usual. However, the Post Office department has agreed to give expeditious handling to workers pay checks and has issued instructioss to that effect. Consideration shall be given mail schedules and special efforts made to effect payment prior to the holidays. . N. L. R. B. REGION 22 GIVES STATISTICS were charge cases and one was a petition.
