DECEMBER 16, 1938 LABOR LABORS DEFEATS NON-PARTISA- LABOR N LEAGUE (Continued from page 2) of labor, failed to recognize that labors unity must go hand in hand with its industrial and organ izational unity. I do not mean to blame anyone and I find no satisfaction whatever in crying I told you so. We are all to blame. The fact remains that on the eve of the most important test that labor was to face in Pennsylvania, its leadership was divided, confused, arrayed in hostile camps; its following was split, bewildered, dismayed. So far as the political campaign was concerned there was no unity either in the A. P. L. or the C. I. 0. camps. The president of the American Federation of Labor indorsed one candidate, while the president of the State Federation of Labor worked for another. The central bodies of the A. F. L. were divided in their sympathies. There was no wholehearted enthusiasm for any candidate or ticket among the C. I. (Continued from page 1) tice into a journeymans position, through the proposed city manager plan, by selecting political stooges of predatory wealth, instead election by the people. Labor, in both its organized anc O. affiliates. Under confusion anc bewilderment, bred by division anc hostility, overwhelmed the rank and file of labor. Is it any wonder the state was lost to labor, to prog ress, to the New Deal ? Michigans Loss The story of Michigan is equally tragic. Many are under the impression that Governor Murphy lost on the issue of the strikes. I know that it was no issue whatever. Governor Murphys conduct during the strikes and organization drives in the automobile indus try proved him to be one of the most intelligent and kindly and self less executives that any state has ever been blessed with. Certainly he incurred the hatred of the Tories and labor baiters on that account. All the more reason, there fore, why labor should have come unitedly to his support. But it did not do so. In the face of a scurri lous campaign of defamation against this matchless governor, labor wa3 divided and failed to stand up for him. The labor vote (ft was split and Governor Murphy lost, labor lost, the people of Michigan and the entire country lost. In New York, we succeeded in re taining Governor Lehman and Senator Wagner and in electing Representative Mead for the short term in the Senate and Charles Poletti as Lieutenant Governor. It was an exciting campaign in which the American Labor party played Merry Christmas leading role. Lehman would not have been elected possibly without the Labor party vote. The Labor party also almost doubled the vote it had obtained in the first statewide election two years ago. Large as the A. L. P. vote was in this Patronage election, the damage to its prestige because of its failure to elect its own candidates is a serious one. And again its the same story. & Labor was defeated by labor. The office of city commissioner is an important one. Nine times out of 10 those persons chosen by the people to represent them on the city commission are distinguished for competence and alertness, and ability and integrity. The debates in the commission are keen and the proceedings of the commission meetings are followed with great care by the citizens of the community generally. For the young man seeking a career in public life, membership in the city commission offers an unequalled opportunity to establish a reputation in good government. 0 Two Stores 1260 E. 4th So.
