Show THE SUBJECT OP OF WAGES in conne connection with mome home run annn the subject of wages and the hours of labor constituting a days work is agitating the whole industrial world at the present time and is worthy northy of some nome little consideration among us true we have no very large establishments monopolizing any of the branches branche of banut deture and employing hundreds and thousands of men but there are strong indications of a change in our domestic policy and the force of circumstances cum burnst stances ces will compel us ere long to embark in many enterprises of home industry othir other sources of labor supply thin than what is furnished by them the few f ew mines around us and the casual employment dependent upon the spurts and spasms of those ever dec ieving lively ti times 1 1 must be assured ti to give 11 us that stability 11 and perin permanence alence which is so desirable I 1 in every well ordered community while I 1 am perfectly willing that our mines those that are already developed as well as those that are undeveloped should be worked to their utmost capacity it will be found fouad that some of them are exhaustible and tor for more than one cause will A ALL BE ABANDONED by and bye call this a prophecy if you please but I 1 am willing to risk my reputation upon its correctness and hence the necessity of creating other sources of sappl yand that too in ample aiple time the b masses of the people throughout christendom have to be employed they are workmen not masters to reason upon the causes produce this Is condition is not the object ol oi this awon article tide enough for us that the fact ests now and has existed from time memorial we have gathered irom the various nations of theearta the earth thousands sandhof of workmen that are skilled ledin in many of the branches of the mechanical ch arts where are they and what are they doing they are scattered from one end of the territory to the other as well as in adjoining territories and State sand but bat few of them are engaged in those branches of mechanism to which they are peculiarly adapted unless indeed we except masons and house car carpenters who can find employ meat one half or perhaps two thirds of their time together with a very lew others the large majority of these excellent workmen workman may be altogether unfit to successfully conduct a business in line while their services would be invaluable to those who employed them many a successful f ill manager may noi not be arid and is not a practical workman while his servi cees are indispensable in conducting a business among us there is no nices necessity sity of drawing those wide LINES OF distinction that separate the employer from the employed in the outside world thus creating interests so antagonistic to each other as to produce those serious disputes which are aie almost of daily occurrence and which are alike disastrous to both parties there is no BO doubt oin in my mind but the question of capital and labor will yet rend as sunder the entire civilized world and the qu akings that are heard today to day are only the premonitory symptoms of the final anal eruption it if we are wise we will prepare ourselves against this time for the design of god in gathering us to zion was W as that we might escape every calamity and it we will let the spirit of the gospel influence us we shall never hear of any serious senous difficulty in n zion between employer land jana J employed emp loye between the man of wealth and the poor man for we will realize thie the fact that WE ARE BRETHREN the rich will not oppress the neither will the poor envy the rich because of our oar mutual interest the building up ol oi the kingdom of god according to our capacity monetarily as well as s otherwise for as saints our tin teresta must not inot be divided L keeping ahls in view then why not give the employed a proportionate in wrest terest with the employer in all ail our manufacturing enterprises jor AM one Is certainly dependent upon the other or is money of so much more value than honest labor the former is dead and would for ever remain so were it not or bone and sinew to give it life of itself it is without any value and at the best beat only represents value As we will have to compete with many mammoth establishments abroad some of them of long gand po 1 of every possible pos aible advantage U may be necessary in order to insure k buc uv cess to be careful in regard to the suo sun eject of wages at the start but the mechanic who could be assured of a snare share in the profits of the enterprise if ho he were wise would not then be so tenacious for the highest price per them diem or for contract work especially in view of constant labor but ALL WOULD UNITE in making eich baca industrial enterprise a success tu define in detail the workings of every firm or corporation in regard g rd to the percentage to be paid for money price to be paid for work from the superintendent down to the common laborer and a hundred and one other minutia minati oe is not my purpose this should be left to every individual concerti concern to arra arrange tige and decide tor for itself but the principle I 1 conceive to be a correct one and when carried out iu in honor effectually prevent the disputes that are constantly arising between capital and labor outside of utah by home industries a system of apprenticeship so cot common in older communities could then he be adopted not necessarily involving the long term of seven sevea years but sufficiently long to remunerate any firm that would produce a skilled workman and thus we should be training our sons to habits of industry and usefulness f so essential to the WELFARE OF SOCIETY the e B equitable bitable division of profits is not at aal a new idea but I 1 wish to present it upon the ground of its harmony with the genius of our reli religion zion which extends much farther than a common brotherhood between man and man for in all of our business relations we must bear in a mind the fact that we are brethren in the new and everlasting covenant it is claimed and perhaps justly too that very few of our men are willing to embark in these enterprises to which I 1 reply we have no need to wait for them then let mechanical cal skill be combined with capital sud sufficient lelent that can be secured from f rem the masses a minimum from the many organize yourselves select the most sagacious men for your business managers and innumerable industries can be started and made successful nearly every settlement sett leme at could establish one or mora more and the community that will not sustain such industries is shortsighted short sighted indeed and WHEN successful donled men will only be too glad to buy shares of stock I 1 am f ully fully in accord with the sentiments expressed by adolphus and subscriber in regard to the necessity of continuing to agitate this subject until the people are wholly converted the time has fully arrived when we must establish manufactories manu factories or we shall be supplanted by bv outsiders and be compelled to p play lay second fiddle in f atte which wi will I 1 be a well deserved humiliation for our neglect capitalists are seeking chances for investment and utah despite the many drawbacks to her material prosperity is attracting the attention of mandof many of the shrewd business men of the country who will not be slow to seize won upon the splendid opportunities offered offer edfar for profitable investment in the direction herein named As iw writing in behalf of latter day saints I 1 wish to say I 1 view it as being our imperative duty ditty to BUILD UP ZION and the strangers who come among us ns should be employed by us and not be our masters god Is not going to feed us with manna as he did the children of israel in the wilderness neither will he preserve our clothing that it will not wear out we have the elements around us necessary lor for our food and clothing we are in a position to cultivate the earth and multiply that produce the material tor for our clothing and he expects us to utilize these elements and not mot sow our ways to strangers as we have done for thirty years past thus bringing ourselves into bondage Wetal we talk kand and preach I 1 fast and pray which is a very essential part of our religion but if we will couple all this atwith uniting TEMPORAL INTERESTS together work as a unit and become self sustaining we shall more fully enjoy the tavor favor of heaven and have restored to us those rights of local self overn ment mint of which we are to dav deprived gep government deprived ep rived for I 1 hold that our t condition of oppression is largely dun dul to the material support we have given our enemies if we must have foes I 1 would prefer fighting them at a dis diar tance which will be the case when we become in the full sense of the word self sustaining we hold bold the key to oar prosperity ie ia temporal matters as well as to our ad vaa vas cement in spiritual matters the two cannot be separated abut must operate and cooperate co operate to together ther as s should the entire people 11 arwe TV s to build up our individual interest only though thong h we may acquire wealth thereby so 40 sure sore will our souls be cankered our oar minds be darkened our become weak and we shall fill fall in the day of severe trial LOCAL ECONOMIST |
