Show F FIRST DISTRICT COURT I 1 1 1 PROVO march 71 ath 1887 the statutory examination of jurors began this morning under the new law mr hiles examined them as to their belief intentions if they are mormon if they intend to obey the law and especially ally in regard to the athe recent legislation and it if they can take the oath conscientiously without mental reservation or violence to conscience the oath was then administered by the clerk and signed for record the following were examined and passed this morning J r F thompson wm H fairbanks wm P bennett andrew anderson andersen allen alien houtz hontz N D crandal Cran daU J D page john mcbeth josiah Col coleman emani josephh joseph H wm A haws charles charlese Cb E malstrom charles goodman alonzo calhoun Cal bonn S U jr chase jr and E thurman the following believed it right to have more than one wife could not conscientiously conscientious ay take the oa oatland oat hand were excused joseph harmon richard bird john devey and john P Jo jonea A number ot of others wre called but were not present f 19 i the case care of the peo people ae vs daniel shields et al was called called and the jury is being im paneled at 2 p m the following sentences were pali passed sed david johns made a statement to the court stating his respect tor for and al 0 legi ance to the constitution of the united states and the government as very pro profound frund a portion of which is the right to liberty of conscience stated his belief in the gospel and celestial marriage and that habad he had a testimony that it was a divine revelation and knowing that fact he felt under obligations to his creator to accept and practice that principle which he did on the day of november 1865 he decof recognized nihed the lord god goa almighty the creator of heaven beaven and earth and all that in thern them is and acknowledged his great grat est allegiance to him and could therefore only ask the court to exercise such leniency toward him v as may be consistent with his calling and conscience he was sentenced ced tv tor six months and and costs william webb made a similar state ip ment and received the same penalty christian P was a a poor man and had bad a large family dependent upon him ho he received six months r soren C peterson was in a like con and received a like sentence edward made a statement to the court bearing his testimony to toe the gospel and his allegiance thereto therel he had 4 a large family and ws was in moderate circumstances he helas was sentenced to six months isaac bullock ind and joseph date were arraigned and pleaded not guilty the court house was crowded with spectators till there was not standing room the tintic lynching lunching lyn ching case the people vs daniel shields et al is ou on and the jury hiir being im paneled it is sup supposed cosed they will oe two or three days in getting a jury |
