RESALE Consignment Store of East Carbon Across from the Texaco 637-748- the past 33 years, Martha Pavich has been doing all her own yard work and house repairs. Her husband was an injured miner, paralyzed from the waist down so she took care of the lawn, the small orchard near her house and her small cut. In fact, most perpetrators look and act just like everyone else. But with a little education, people can learn how to spot and report possible cases of violent families in need of help and counseling. There are typically three types of spouse batterers, according to major research studies: Type one abusers act generally the same across all situations and victims by being violent, antisocial, belligerent and contemptuous with a tendency towards alcoholism. Type two perpetrators are the majority, who tend to abuse only in the family, but are less severe and aggressive as well as having a tendency to suppress angry emotions and a remorseful feeling. Type three batterers also tend to be violent only within the family, but they are more socially isolated and socially incompetent. However, they are often depressed, carry a feeling of inadequacy and are emotionally volatile. The different types of abusers provide consequences for victims, ranging from serious psychological damage to scrapes and bruises or as extreme as emotional trauma to death. There are five generalized variables that influence the consequences and damage a victim will face. The nature of the abusive act, as well as its intensity, number of occurrences and duration. Individual characteristics of the victim like age, self esteem or physical properties. The nature of the relationship between the victim and the perpetrator. Response of others not involved in the abuse like support or intervention. Factors involved with abuse that may account for the problem or future dilemmas. The most noticeable consequence of abuse is physical evidence and it is also the foremost concern for many agencies involved with domestic violence. Physical abuse can put the perpetrator in jail and can go as far as putting the life of the victim in danger. Thousands are killed or seriously injured as victims of family violence or abuse. It has been estimated that 18,000 dis- severely abled due to physical violence. The emotional and psychological consequences are sometimes more extreme and can damage a person even more than most physical abuse. A prominent finding indicates that all types of family violence are linked with- diverse - psychological problems ranging from aggression, to anxiety to depression. Throughout the nation, more citizens have been reporting abuse and violence to law enforcement authorities for the past decade than from previous years.
