Telecommunications Protection Agency (Muskogee, Okla.) and A&J Publishing DBA: Memorial Veterans New (Phoenix, Ariz.) entered into settlement agreements with the division for violations of the Telephone Fraud Prevention Act. Neither company is registered with the division to conduct a telephone solicitation business in Utah. In addition, A&J Publishing reportedly violated the Charitable Solicitations Act by soliciting for charitable purpose without registering with the division. The division alleged that Telecommunications Protection Agency (TPA) was contacting victims who had recently lost money in telephone scams and offering to obtain refunds for the victims. TPA required the victims to send a portion of the money they were trying to recover as a fee. TPA contacted a Utah citizen and sold its services for $2,000. However, the Utahn never received any further money from TPA. As part of the settlement with the division, TPA will pay $2,000 restitution to the victim. A&J Publishing allegedly telephoned a Salt Lake business and solicited an employee to purchase advertising in a national veterans magazine for the purpose of supporting the cause ofveterans. A solicitor for A&J falsely stated that the proceeds from the advertisement purchase would help provide crutches and other equipment to some of the fellas that werent so lucky. As a result of the divisions investigation, A&J Publishing has agreed to pay $1,025 restitution to the victim.
