A Tourists flock to the Western Mining and Railroad Museum in Helper during the hot summer days of August. They explore the many small rooms leading off narrow hallways in the restored hotel. In each are treasures from the past. At least they had soft beds in the jail, he replies, checking out a jail exhibit. The general store is one of the newest exhibits and is filled with wonderful things from the past. Theres an old fif-tyis- telephone, an Alka-Seltzmaker, an ancient cash register, scales, wash tubs, sad irons, wine casks, crockery, utensils and cracker barrels. er Especially interesting are kitchen tools used in the Italian immigrants kitchens. Just as intriguing is a small room with a hand-mad- e wagon and a large sled. Beautiful, handstitched baby dresses are exhibited on one wall. A glass display case contains a porcelain baby doll. Looking through Helpers fronts and hotels. Whatever the expectations they come in with, tourists leave with a greater appreciation for the life and culture of Carbon County at the turn of the century. What was it like to be a child miner?
