Water conservation has been a concern nationwide for several years, but only recently has it reached the stage where home owners are being required to comply with mandatory limits. Many municipalities already require new and remodeled homes to be equipped with water-efficie- nt plumbing fixtures. With our precarious water situation in Utah, it makes sense for us to start conserving before we must comply. Incidently, there is at least one community in northern Utah that is limiting building permits on the basis of available water. In the average household, somewhere around 200,000 gallons can be saved annually by installing three watersaving devices. These are low-flo- w toilets (tank dams, dual handled flush, etc.), watersaving shower heads and faucet aerators. The savings on an annual basis vary depending upon your local rates, but about $200 can be saved each year for a family of four. These devices can be installed in about 10 or 15 minutes for a total cost of less than $25. A waterShowerheads (natural gas) or $250 for hot water from an electric water heater.
