Lighting: The best times of to day photograph a landscape are early morning and late afternoon. The sun's light warms the scene and creates long shadows. At noon, the sun is shining straight down and is unflattering to the subject. Often when you're traveling you can't wait around for the right light. Use a fill flash to compensate when the light isn't as good as you'd like. The flash opens up the shadows on a person's face. It also rounds out the light in close-u- p detail shots. Fill flash simply uses a portion of the flash capacity, allowing the ambient light to be incorporated along with the light from the flash. Colors in the photograph will come alive by getting the extra bit of light that the fill flash provides. Your camera has a couple of automatic flash modes: normal flash, fill flash and no flash. Camera ready: How many times have you said, "I wish I had my camera?" Always carry a camera when you're traveling in order to catch those nice street scenes or beautiful landscapes. Today's cameras are small enough that you can carry them in a case attached to your belt or even in your pocket. Shoot that incredible shot when it appears. You may think of going back the flash. Flash: Experiment with flash, fill flash and no flash. A flash will do no good in a scene 100 yards away, but it's very effective for closer photos. Editing: Do this after the trip, when you can make judg- ments with an objective eye. Digital images are basically free to shoot and should be edited the same way. Look at the images on a desktop monitor to assess sharpness, content and composition. Those images are then easily deleted or stored on a CD. To shoot with film or digitally? That is the question. I've found that it's much easier to not carry film. Some airport security scans will ruin high-spee- d film and can affect the lower-spee- d film as well. Before 911, some airport personnel would hand inspect your bag of film, avoiding the scanners. That may not be the case now. Digital cameras can be sent through airport security scane ners without problems. flash cards compact digital that store the images have no moving parts and are not afSolid-stat- fected. Moreover, a card will store over 150 images, equivalent to over four rolls of film. Digital cameras produce good quality images that can be printed at home or any profes- sional lab. The Utah State Tax Commission Encourages Electronic Income Filing Many taxpayers are catching on that electronics is the way to go when it comes time to filing their tax returns. Utah's system, put into service in 1994, has grown increasingly popular. Last with almost 1 3 of filers year's numbers were the highest electronic over choosing filing paper filing in Utah. "One of the main benefits is a faster refund." According to Jodi Monaco, Utah State Tax Commission spokesperson. Electronic returns show an incredibly small error rate, compared with an error rate of up to 17 on paper returns. "The greater the chance that you might have a mathematical error, the greater the chance that your refund will be delayed while we review your return." The Commission lists three reasons that they, tax professionals and the public prefer electronic filing. There is less paper to handle. This simplifies things for the person filing, reduces the level of effort needed by the state to process the return information, and also helps the environment. Returns are processed more timely. Electronically filed returns has been edited and verified as part of the software used. There are virtually no missing fields or mathematical errors, two areas that result in large numbers of errors on paper based returns. Monaco added, "We are encouraged with the continual growth rate we experience each year, especially as customer acceptance of doing business electronically increases and we are able to offer more services."For state and federal income tax forms and information, visit wvvwincometax.utah.gov. e, 1 Will you be one of SMALL BUSINESS GROWTH COURTESY OF EXPRESS BUSINESS BANKING When you re building a small business, you dont have time to mess around with multiple applications.
