Show Off the top Homecoming by Lori Olsen Its Homecoming week! Now, this can be big fun! Even for me, a semi football fan, Homecoming can be exciting. When you have kids at the high school, you cant help but be drawn in to the excitement a little. We had boys at our house this weekend reviewing last springs yearbook. They were looking for new ideas for a homecoming dance date. There was a lot of hooping and laughing. They may sound pretty 'macho' in my family room, but those guys are big chickens when they get in front of a girl. My senior needed a friend to accompany him when he delivered his invitation... he left balloons in a cellophane wrapped car. He didnt even talk to her! Wow! I didnt realize the agony boys go through to ask someone out on a date. They fear rejection! They think the girl will laugh in their face or ignore the invitation. Come on, guys! Girls arent that cruel. Of course, I remember when Jim would ask me out to special dances. He was apt to leave a teddy bear with a note pinned to it. Maybe things haven't changed much in 20 years. There is more to Homecoming than the big dance. The big football game... Pride is at stake. Face it, if the guys lose the game, their dates will be consoling the football players all evening. Now, now that is not going to happen. We are definitely going to win this game. Isnt that how administrators plan the football schedule. They make sure the Homecoming game is against a team we have a chance of beating. may be out of line, but come on, 1 Gunnison wouldnt want to play North Sevier for Homecoming. And North Sevier wouldnt want to play Kanab this week either. The bonfire, powder puff, assemblies, dressing up as a hippy, and wearing school colors, is all part of the fun. Why dont we all follow "suit" and wear recreation clothing on Thursday and school colors on Friday? I Oct. 2. 1996 Show College employees recognized for service dont remember jhuch ,about Homecoming when t was in High School. I did play powder puff one year. Hey, the thing I remember most about Homecoming, was getting out early on Friday for the parade, eating hot potatoes smothered in butter at the game, and cleaning up the mess at the school on Monday. I just didnt get into the game thing. We did have to protect our school rock. We had this huge rock out in the front yard of our school. For every special event, we would paint the rock. The rival teams goal was to paint our rock in their colors during Homecoming week. Jim, my husband, remembers defending the block "S" Skyline High had on the foothills east of the school. During homecoming it was traditional to carry sacks of lime up the hill and highlight the dirt "S". Then lights would be strung, a generator carried up the hill and a guard posted for the part-tim- Lott, Mt. Pleasant, has been working in the Activity Center for about 15 years. Homecomings are something to be relished. Remember how you spent your days in school and help the kids this year make some good memories. Hantavirus continues to be very dangerous to humans with a 50 death rate in known cases, said epidemiologist Wyatt Frampton of the Utah Department of Health who investigated the case. People need to continue to use great caution in areas where rodents may be present, he added. Latest CDC information has found that the Hantavirus is present primarily in the droppings, saliva and urine of rodents, usually deer mice. Humans who breath in the virus as a mist or dust may become infected and n w 6) 3) by Todd Wheeler There were the 60,000 cheering, screaming fans.
