Show Page 2 Salina Sun October 75 1395 Citizen concerned Dear Editor: Concerning the issue of horses in Salina City limits: Personally. I don't mind horses being kept in a well maintained corral located anywhere (and would prefer them to dogs running loose and the problems that can lead to). But this is a rural area, which is one of the reasons we chose to live here. Horses (and dogs) go with being rural. But alcohol shouldn't be part of the package of rural living. The North Sevier area has 60 of the alcohol related problems in Sevier County, and Sevier County is one of the worst in the State of Utah. I do not believe Salina needs anymore vendors of alcohol. That is w hy I requested the Salina Sun to ask the city council candidates to respond to how they would vote should another beer permitalcohol license be applied for. How our future council-me- n will v ote in granting beer permits shouldn't be the only issue in this coming election, but to be well informed voters, we citizens should knowhow they are going to vote on this issue as w ell as many others. Thank you to the past, present and future council members for the many long hours they give in behalf of our town (often thanklessly). This is only one out of many, many issues they have had to deal with trying to represent the majority of their constituents. and to Dana Shaw and My hat goes off to Stiggs for going the rest of the Black Hawk Arena Committee for working hard to keep beer out of the arena and still make the arena a success and asset to our commu- Check smoke detectors this weekend Sevier County fir rests PETERSON. Most fires in the home happen between ten at night and six in the morning. Most victims die from smoke and poisonous gases long before fire threatens. The Utah Safety Council reminds you to test your smoke detectors each week and change the batteries in them annually. Daylight Savings Time, is a good time to get into the habit of putting fresh batteries in vour detectors, so you will always know how old they are. Old batteries can be used in radios and for other purposes that are not as critical as your smoke detectors. If you haven't v et felt the need to purchase smoke detectors, hopefully this will convince you. It is a myth that you can smell smoke and wake up on your own. Fires produce toxic gases, some of which you can't smell, which often kill people long before the fire reaches them. Be sure detectors you have, or plan to purchase have a UL or FM marker. Install them on the ceiling or high on the wall outside bedroom areas. Install them on the ceiling or high on the wall outside bedroom areas. If you are in a multilevel home, a detector should be installed on each level. A person who is hearing impaired may not be able to hear a smoke alarm go off. Utah Elk hunters lose their way According to Sheriff John Meacham. the North Sevier Sheriffs Search and Rescue were called to look for two elk hunters who had not returned from hunting Thursday night. Apparently. Rich Mitchell of Salt Lake City, and Lane Bagiev of American Fork went into the grazing pasture east of Rex's Reservoir just before dark and left their vehicle to hunt on foot. They were unable to find their way back to the truck in the dark, and spent the night under a tree. The two hunters were able to find their wav the next morning and were found by Search and Rescue members shortly after they arrived in the grazing pasture area. Dear Editor, flashing lights. October 21, Utah Highway Patrol dispatch received a 911 call from a cellular phone in the area of Aurora, Utah. Blaine Chambers. 47. victim of a gunshot wound told the dispatcher he was being driven to Sevier Valley Hospital by a Dr. Pledger, a member of the hunting party. Chambers was treated for a gunshot wound to the lower calf of the left leg. The bone had been broken in two places with extensive tissue damage, according to Sheriff John Meacham. The party was hunting in the Maple Grove area on the Probert Ranch when Rhett Chamber, 14. the victim's son. fired a shot from a 30-3- 0 calibre rifle at a buck deer. When the deer ran, the boy was attempting to clear the w eapon and it accidentally discharged, striking his father in the leg.
