Max was liberated after a fast advance by the American forces in the Reich. Mrs. Maggie Newman received a report released by the U.S.S. Makin Island, and sent home by her son, Lee J. New man, S 1C on that CVEs part, in the Iwo Jima Operation. The report is too lengthy to give in detail, but it tells of the shelling by American ships, of the island, and the thanks given the Navy by the Marines for the formers part in the landings, and the support given the land fighters. It also reports the spectacle of a Jap plane shot dow n and the picture of it burning, striking the sea and exploding.
