watt we found the settlement of american I 1 fork or k about as we found it years sears ago with the a very pretty little meeting meetinghouse house it a beautifully situated ted and a fine city could be built upon t this is site and flourishing orchards of the best fruit might grow where comparatively ively sort worthless vort liless cottonwoods cotton woods now nourish flourish to the west a few miles the limped waters of utah lake wash vash its eastern shores where an abundance of fine hay is produced and where the land is well adopted for farming purposes on the east side of the settlement stretching ingsnorth north and south there 19 aiso also much good farming land larid aud and plenty for the purpose of grazing the which runs through the sett settlement lenient is of a superior qua qun quality fity I 1 am Batis satisfied nied fied that the soil aswell is well weil adapted for fur the production of all ali kinds h kinds hinds of fruit th atwill nourish flourish in this clin climate wate fate I 1 visited br Hind leys garden which I 1 found well weli laid but and planted anth with considerable choice fruit his orchard ia is young and the trees trebs have a bright dark green breon healthy and vigorous appearance there are other othet oth ergood good gardens in tile the place but not mot seem seeni to be that attention paid to the planting and cultivation of the best fruits seedling leach peach trees which are neither ornamental nor pro bitable fi table tabie prevail generally NV here there is any pre at all to raising fruit with suitable energy and perseverance the american fork settlement could in a short time mako make a city gity beautiful for situation and worthy of pr praise alse alge after dinner the president rolled out opt for Springy ille at abouna quarter past four when he and his company arrived there I 1 cannot say for I 1 was not there mys myself elfand and aud trav traveling eIng companions were working our passage in a the rear we tried howle howig however ven ver to profit by the slowness of our passage in indulging our powers of observation and taking particular notice of objects by the way side and by observing contrasts and making comparisons the rain had fallen heavily between american merican merlean fork and pring ville making the tile roads muddy und and more difficult to travel over we did not notice anything worthy of note until we came to the provo stream I 1 had heard much said qaid in DA praise praire of the provo bridge and naturally loving to see works of art I 1 promised myself ay a treat in examining that structure for a plain wooden bridge I 1 must say that it is a ver very v substantial affair and capable of resisting almost any amount of pressure indeed I 1 think iscis an in improvement upon bridges bridged of that class I 1 can only find one fault with it and that is we had to cross through the stream to get to the bridge which we fouard built high and nearly dry on the pra fj side after the bridge was built the tiie sir stream eam cam refused to run under I 1 it f as though insulted insul ted fed at the ine lue meag ag reness of its I 1 span for so large a stream the bridge stands there as though waiting for the saucy stream to change 10 its mind when I 1 that will be your correspondent is unable to sav say say in passing through the city of pro provo vo we had plenty of time to note objects we did not observe any advance in the improvement of the eit cit eity city but upon the whole I 1 think it is io lo 10 looking 12 up good improvements have commenced men cel cea that flax is still there over the entrance of that blacksmith shop on the op opposite osite side of the street from rhe the elephant Elep elephant rant tant 11 Is that a lie lle new sort of flax for to my certain knowledge it has been there without the least change for the last twelve years I 1 should think it is rotten enough for the brake by this time when we passed by tife the new meeting house we felt comforted and hope prin up tip and id the tile future of provo locked bright wo we finally reached esprin M v lile profited by our observation ad arid edified by the wise teachings of our honored nored fellow traveler F D richards lUc lue hards but worn somewhat by our physical eserre exercises so E as rin crAlle 10 ain am the people from fro n neighboring e lg ing settlements began to gather in at an early earls hoti hour and at the usual time tinie for worship the services commenced elder george Q cannon read a hymn composed for the occasion by W clegg which was sung by the springville Spring ville choir after which bishop caleigh raleigh opened the meeting by trayer prayer pres joseph young addressed t the e meeting with his us usual ual fervency the people assembled under a ne new bowery ot of the follow following 1 i n dimensions feet by 00 90 it is put 1 f up in a substantial manner I 1 is high higland and well ventilated fenced round three poles high and too thinly covered the stand would have been macil much more com eom iodious if it had been six feet wide wider rt and the benches on the stand would have been much more comfortable if they had been 15 inches wide instead of 12 10 inches it is hard to sit upon hard benches 1 two hours in one gua gna place when they are made after the best and most approved pattern far for comfort and ease buit but when they are made of 12 inch wide plank and the tife back advancing upon that an inch without any visible leall lean backward to it sitting to listen to tir the word of life on such benches becomes bec bee omesa a sort of penance george D watt addressed the meet ing a short time after aft or which it was adjourned jour fied to 2 and dismissed by george A smith afternoon 2 the meeting was called to order by pres concluded by a benediction from geo A A smith the congregation remained until ahe meeting was concluded at the tho expense of getting well wetted the company left springville Spring ville about 3 and arrived at lehl lehi about 7 between BattIe battle Creek and lehi we were favored by another refreshing shower springville Spring ville is most advantageously situated in one of the great natural wasatch ran rane range rano o of mountains it is situated not lear ipar far from the base bagh of the mountains in its vicinity the Th evater i ater which waters it issues from a daify bil gorge named hobble hobbie creek near by it is plentiful and of the best quality the lana land upon which tile the city ety is built is a ravely gravely g loam loaf n and most admirably adapted forthe for the production of fruits to the westward ching for several miles to the shores of utah lake lies iles in the nia fia fiorilli farming and ilay hay lands of the settlement I 1 sie soe to hinder the tha inhabitants of this settlement to build up a most magnificent city upon this site the land all around is rich beyond description and the elements drop down fatness milk flaws in great quantities and so would honey ir if tile tiie honey bee was multiplied and eared cared for fur there are a few rew good gardens and orel lards but tut if the tho proper ourse course were taken an and d the proper inter es at t in manifested 1 I ilif ested in importing to this place ethe the most choice fruits wihib and cider eider would flow almost like a river I 1 have not seen a better district for tiu tha raising of silk slik in abundance the benches at the base of the mountains on the tile east of the city should be planted with thousands of mulberry trees they can be had of pres young who has manifested great interest in this branch of industry I 1 observe on the south side of the public square an attempt at making a grove of trees for shade and promenade I 1 should judge from the way those trees are planted that the design su is to plant trees entirely around the square nine trees deep from the fence fenc this is very commendable and ana praise worthy but I 1 discover that the trees planted are chiefly cotton woods S why not plant thousands of mulberry trees around this square mixing among them walnut large growing apple pear and cherry trees and blaek black locusts for these trees will give shade equally as dense as the cottonwood cotton wood besides yielding an abundance of food for the silk worms fruit for the use of man and when cut down valuable timber for the wheelwright right and cabinet maker jj ithe the house which the springville Spring ville people have formerly used for a place of worship fronts on the main street of the city and is opposite opp osite the public publio square it was at first built for a seminary of learning and was ased elised a few years by the people asa meetinghouse it is now undergoing a transformation and when finished
