In an editorial published July 22, the New York Sun makes the fol- lowing comment on what is being done to reduce the high cost of living, and the Sun has it sized up about right. It says in part: Congress is much disturbed over the high cost of living, and congress ought to be; but neither the numerous bills nor the vigorous speeches on the subject, so far as we have read and examined them, fix, aim at or even mention the fundamental trouble the hardpan cause. In the Senate, for example, Mr. Kenyon or Mr. Kendrick or somebody else introduces a measure to license packers of meat products, manufacturers of dairy products, etc., under the Department of Agriculture. We see no large objectProbaion to the license as such. bly the average manufacturer or merchant would rather do business under a Federal charter like that than under some other regulations and restrictions, State and municipal. It was Mr. Wilsons Grain Administration which began the thing. Labor has only been trying and trying in vain to keep up with it. If anybody else had had to pay the farmers $2. 26 a bushel for their crop the Government would insist that he should sell his wheat for what it was worth, not for what he could exact. But when the government has bought the wheat it insists that so as to get rid of it at a profit it must exact from American consumers famine prices. It insists that with this artificial basis of wheat putting corn on a similar Dasis of $2 the American people must make a profit for the United States Treasury, although this very wheat profit compels the American people to pay billions of dollars more for their other food. What has Congress to say about that? Nothing.
