Show falsehoods ABOUT UTAH from numerous letters received at this office it is evident that some of our religious friends in utah are laboring hard to revive the old anti mormon sentiment throughout the united states and elsewhere the tactics are the old ones and from the similarity of the proceedings it would seem that the campaign is directed from a common comman center as in the days of old we mention the matter believing that the law abiding peaceful citizens of utah mor mons and non mormons cormons are interested in knowing something of the methods and alms aims of some of their alleged friends A correspondent from chattanooga tenn states that one rev W H bagby of salt lake city at a recent national church convention entertained the delegates with a discourse on the ripe harvest of the west he exhausted it seems his eloquence in glowing description of the beauty of valleys and mountains and then contrasted this lovely picture with the awful aw condition of a people worshiping joe smith and consequently being ignorant superstitious and immoral Im moril 11 he closed our correspondent says with the modest suggestion that be placed in his hands tor for missionary purposes because with a round sum like ima that he could do more good than with 1000 a year A correspondent from bloomington ills writes that the presbyterians rians in that vicinity are very active A gentleman who has been engaged in missionary sio nary work in utah tor for a number of years but without success is lecturing about our slate according to him too utah is a verl veritable table garden spot but he denies that any credit is due to the first settlers of this region he asserted according to the report that all the offices in utah are held by mormons cormons Mor mons who by virtue of their offices office protect proF lawbreakers law breakers but a reverend gentleman gent lemah named alslev who ahill is pastor of the swedish bedish lutheran church of this city notwithstanding an effort some time atto ago by some of his congregation to cef rid of him surpasses these two worthies in his malignant attacks upon a people among whom he seeks proselytes prose lytes in a religious periodical he came out with a lengthy article a against at his own countrymen and his ut literary effort finally found its 16 way to the columns of one of the most influential swedish newspapers the reverend gentleman says that since 1860 about swedes have come to utah as an mormons cormons Mor mons and then he goes on to describe the heartrending poverty and degradation under which they th ey are suffering here they have no money they are compelled to trade at the store of the bishop they are defrauded in every way possible and the women in particular are the victims of this religion the reverend writer of that article suggests that the swedish ladles ladies rise and declare a holy war amr of revenge against a sect that has brought unspeakable misery upon their own sla sisters 1 this Is sufficient to show the tenor of the ithe conspiracy against utah we do not stop to refute the falsehoods put forth under the guise of religion but may perhaps be allowed to point out that the systematic propagation of anch falsehoods is detrimental to the interests of this state even more so than to the religion which is the apparent object of attack the latter exists and is triumphant because it is founded on the eternal rock against which the furious waves of hatred and error have hare raged in vain all these centuries tu irles we can understand the disappointment the of some christian ministers they come to utah under the false impression that they will find on an ignorant superstitious people led by a tyrannical priesthood they picture to themselves the honor and glory to be theirs their when by their learning and careful train ling they ahall be able to add converts to their churches rescued from the ranks of the misguided mi people supposedly only waiting for their arrival to embrace the salvation olf of which they are the evangels then they come and find that the mormons cormons are intelligent generally oon contented tented and happy and above all enjoying that perfect liberty secured by human and divine laws they find that the man made doctrines have no power but become dark compared to the caspel of jesus as the flame of a tallow dip by the side aide of an electric lamp they ifrey realize they can do almost nothing they hate ha te to acknowledge their mis eke only truly noble and honest characters are willing to do that without compulsion horace hence their frantic efforts to explain to the world the cause of their failure as missionaries even at the most cruel sacrifice of truth we are haper to say that not all christian ministers in utah are of the miserable class here noticed there are some who are pursuing their labors in an humble way doing all the good they can without endeavoring to injure their fellow men were there more of this latter class there is no reason why peace should not reign here perpetually perpetua ut illy for one mormon do doctrine is to accord to fro all the liberty of conscience they ask aak for themselves |
