| Show OUR BOYS AT HONOLULU wa y if the enthusiasm with which uncle sams troops were received at honolulu counts for anything he friends of annexation of the hawaiian islands seem to have entirely the best of the argument the account of the arrival and reception of the first philippine expedition at honolulu as pub dished in the hawaiian gazette of june 3 is enthusiastic almos in the extreme and judging from all appearances that va paper per only reflect the sentiment of the people with reppert to the nation of whose government and free eions old glory is the emblem for the copy of the paper the news Is indebted to hon jerrold jen old R P letchel Le Let tOhei chei and a few extracts from the account of the reception of the troop tro saad which c overs covers altogether two pages of the gazette z will be sufficient to give the reader an idea of the kind of gala days t the h e people of hawaii had while the boys in blue were their guests the kapur pa por tells of the eight ing of the transports as s follows the town was sot set in a fever of excitement cit ement when at a little atter after 4 wednesday afternoon the boys at central office conveyed the message to thousands of anxious people in the city that there were thi thiep ep foreign steamers off Wair manalo the mess mesa age had corne come from ohp other side of the island and it was impossible to tell at the time what the vessels were just three columns of smoke floating away to the southeast could be distinguished it was not many minutes after two this the message came that the steamers could be seen by diamond aanond Dl head charley and that they were the city of peking the australia and another steamer that could not be seen been very distinctly the fire whistle sounded immediately the signal of five whistles and instant ly flags all over the city went up and carriages and crowds of pedestrians went hurrying along to the different wharves they had a long wait but t ty y were not in the least fatigued for they were on the tiptoe tip toe of expectancy and talked gaily there has not been in many years such a commotion ir ip this city as the news created the gazette then goes on to describe the meeting of the transports by the reception committee of accompanied by all the native vessels anywhere in sight and every line bristles with enthusiasm every move of the troopships is faithfully followed until they are safely in at the wharves which as aa well as the streets are literally jammed with people eager to welcome the soldiers none of the men were allowed to leave the boats last evening coutin continues the gazette they passed the early hours of the evening in commenting on the grand reception accorded them by Hono lulus citizens and arguing the subject whether they were to be given shore leave on the morrow occasionally the strain str aliz of america or the star spangled banner would come from one corner of the peking and would ba taken up by the boys on board the australia or the sydney which was anchored in the stream only a few yards away then cornea comes a recital of the doings on the next day when the soldiers were allowed to land and were given the freedom of the city the first day dav of the occupation of this place by american troops was one of the greatest minor solar periods the town has ever known the investment was thorough the occupation complete the conquest entire and the surrender whole and graceful the positive and negative poles of enthusiasm flashed and flowed the sentiment of cordiality hospitality was heartily extended and was accepted in the spirit that it was offered f As aa to has not seen ouch crowds in what may be called the modern times there is nothing on record to which the invasion may be compared it is without precedent in every way about 1600 1500 men were ashore off the transports from 9 a m to 2 p m and the same number from 2 p m to 7 p m thus all the expedition members benj enjoyed 0 liberty during the day the men fairly revelled bevelled revel led in the respite from duty they forgot all tb ta trials of sea aea traveling and detail on ship they were given royal reception tion everywhere they realized that honolulu was keeping own open house and they appreciated it after reviewing the workings of atu taw committee in charge of the reception lon the paper says each member of the community cam com munty was literally a committee of the one on making it comfortable and pleasant for the boys in blue bine it is ia not good for the paper to tell tall of the hospitality of the town in language too ardent let to Is be modestly mode stIr said that honolulu does this sort of thing in this sort eort of way from force of habit it to is good to vay say there lp is keenest and and most m 0 st certain ce rt ain abiding biding aj sympathy here for the uniform and the flag brought to to this port by the troop ships an dea of the eights taken lie in and enjoyed by the american soldiers
