| Show OBITUARY NOTES ELDER DAVID M STEWART ogden utah aug ang 23 1898 david ad M stewart was on ons of the most moat prominent and successful workers wor kera in the church ot of jesus christ of latter day saints Sain its his name is known and he is respected and beloved in every nation where the gospel has been preached by the elders in this dispensation he has traveled thousands of miles to preach the message of salvation to the nations and strictly on the apostolic literally without purse OT or acrie 11 his ministerial labors have been as successful as those of any other man in israel he has haa rought brought b great numbers of people into this church who have subsequently called ban blessed and have thanked god for sending him to them with the goami which is the power of god unto salvation they cherish his memory with love and gratitude david M stewart was ever ready and willing to leave home holme and friend and bual business mess interests to obey the call ot at the men whom he esteemed and honored as servants of god and whom he loved as dearly as he did his hie own me he was the son soil of dawid david marshall and mary stewart his hia parents were poor but honest they hey t were we te frugal and industrious he was beai at irven ayrshire re scotland march 8 1826 his father died while david was tn in his infancy ancy and thus early he was left to the care of his widowed mother in his youth like many others pf af his class he be struggled hard to earn a main tad nance for himself and to aid his hie mother also his education limited but his natural abilities were of a no mean order he was intel intelligent it quick to grasp a truth and he readily rea lily solved problems which to many others seemed difficult to comprehend in 1842 he first heard the gospel preached ed b by y the day saint fj elders d er s he b believed th the principles they taught to be the same as those preached by the savior and his apostles on may ath of the same saime year he was baptized into the church 0 of jesus cowl christ at of lat latter ter day saints at paisley scotland and soon secured a knowledge of af pf the divinity of the doctrines brines trines which he had ema braced which knowledge remal remained ned with him the remainder of his life I 1 shortly y attar af ter he joined the church he became exceedingly anxious to gather gath er with the authorities and the body of the saints he was without means 00 oo travel but he was determined to make an aa effort to accomplish his purpose he started on foot aud and alone end and worked his way until he reached T liverpool england there he was introduced to ito apostle wilford woodruff who obtained for him opportunity to work his passage to america on oh october 3 8 1845 1945 he sailed on board the ship windsor which was commanded by captain patterson Patte raon on tho the of november he la landed laded ded sit ait new mew orleans ns from which plaice by the kind aid of Pait terso n he secured mansey tto to carry him to st louis lewis mo where he was met and kindly received by an n elderly lady a latter day saint and whom he in his record WIS old mother moter MeMa mcmaster stem he knew anew her in him land she said she know knew he be was corning coming tor for she had bad seen him in a and had made preparations to receive and provide for him bim at that time the saints were making their forced exodus from nauvoo he remained at st 81 louis about two years cewa working in the wal al mines early in the year 1847 david M X started west on toot foot and nd quite aone alone to find the bo body dy of the church in due time he reached winter quarters where he met one of his elder robert S campbell who introduced him to joseph young brother bromer of president brigham young elder joseph young was then president of all the quorums of seventy shortly af after ter the introduction and some conversation with him joseph ordained david M stuart ito the office of 0 seventy and installed him in the family of elder oreo orson n pratt to take the lead in family prayers and to aid the faill family in every other way that was necessary as flar far as he was able ito do so eo elder pratt at that time was on a mission in the east on june 22 elder stuart lef deft t winter quarters and commenced his journey overland across the great american plains in captain capan A 0 smoots oits company driving team all the way utah in his journal he relates masny mamy thrilling adventures through which he passed while crossing the wild prairies ea on sept 28 1847 he reached salt lake valley in good health and he wals satisfied with his lot iol in the spring of 1848 he was called upon by president john smith to go back with a company of other elders to winter quarters david M was waa the bearer of a great number of letters from the valley to president brigham Youn young gand and many other brethren at that place and still further east the company started on the ath of may with riding horses and pack animals after meeting with numerous by the way and being detained by the indians indiana aa prisoners for some time they finally arrived at winter quarters safe and sound and were received with great joy by the authorities of the church at that place david delivered the letters for president young and the other people at that place after resting awhile he proceeded onward to st louis and delivered the other letters he had for the people in that city david M stuart may be said to be the first mall mail carrier from salt lake city to st louis in that city he engaged again at work in the coal mines and earned enough money to purchase a good outfit to return again to his new home in the mountains of utah in 1849 in company with several others david made a trip to california where he remained for several years he also visited mexico on march 26 1853 1858 he was admitted to citizenship of the united states in the sixth judicial district court at sacramento california he remained in the golden state working and also doing missionary labor from there he went on a mission to oregon on may 28 1858 he was married to miss sarah keyes at honey haney lake valley elder G higgins officiating at the nuptials on april 20 1861 he went on a mission to scotland where he labored preaching the gospel two years yeam he returned home may 29 1863 the same year he was appointed to preside over the first ward in ogden on feb 13 1865 he was elected a member of at the ogden city c council in november 1867 he was sent on a mission to the united states he returned home again in october 1899 1869 the same year he was waa appointed a home missionary in the weber stake of zion alon he held that position which he magnified honorably up to the time of his death on december 20 1969 he was elected a member of the high council of the weber stake in 1870 he was appointed counselor to bishop C W west the sanie same year he was sent on another anoche r mission to th the united states he was absent about one year on february 8 1875 he was again selected a mein member berof of the city council and in october tol fol lowing he was sent on still another tola sion aion he returned july 17 1876 his respite from the mission field however was but brief for in october following he was sent again to the states to pt preside e over the st louis district which embraced a number of states from this mission he returned september 96 1877 on november 3rd ard the same year he was ordained a high priest by apostle F D richardo richardb in 1878 he was appointed tithing agent of the welter stake on may 11 1884 he was set apart as bohoi of uintah ward on february 19 1885 lie he was sent nt on another mission but he was absent only about three months in 1866 he served a term in the utah penitentiary for maintaining and honoring his religious convictions though in doing so he infringed upon the edmunds tucker law in 1890 he was sent on another balm slon to europe where he labored in the ministry something over one year sina na in august 1892 he went on mother mefi sion to oregon from which he returned leturno a february 16 1893 this it will be that ther are few elders laving if any iwo who have filled more missions homerr home or foreign than elder david M stuart he filled them all honorably and to abe satisfaction faction of the authorities of flitt church david M
