| Show r mell F Plunder ths Smithsonian Exhibit reveals the true nature and history of Vikings3F Features Editor 6254270 Sunday May 7 2000 Standard-Examin-er n Keep those SiJii®uQ UbG e-car- Fenway Park to the Freedom Trail there’s plenty to see in this town Cl From comingNorway I’ve been a number By KATHY MIEDEMA staff Standard-Examin- ds d issues Mostly because I didn’t know what they were until after I had avoided them at which point numerous helpful readers sent alerting me to the error of my ways However not the they (the helpful readers) were almost immediately lost on my hard drive Now retrieved I’ll attempt to address some of your weighty comments and travel-relate- are two reasons if you’ve ever to visit Boston should go now The first reason is Fenway Park home of the Red Sox and e one of the last ballparks There old-tim- The debates continue over whether the park which admittedly has many quirks should be tom down and how much should be tom down and when it should be tom down The fact of the matter is Fenway will be tom down Officials hope to be able to play in the new park by 2003 which jneans Fenway sobtwill be replaced by a huge sterile 'concrete monster with more luxury boxes than you could shake a bat at - Even if you’re not a sports fan you should kick yourself if you miss the chance to see hear touch and smell such a great Jnonument to an American institution The other reason to visit Boston now is the series of celebrations planned along the Freedom Trail a path through many of Boston’s neighborhoods that is lined with history all in honor of the 225th anniversary of the start of the Revolutionary queries Astute reader John Beshears informed me that I “left out a few salient points” in one of my columns about Camaval in Rio such as “the Mafia’s He explained: “TTiey had a (Camaval) skybox We were in an adjacent box and stumbled into theirs They make the Sopranos look like a bunch of namby pambies” Mr Beshears I suppose I did not touch on the Brazilian Mafia and their namby-pamb- y effect on US cable TV programming This was probably because I did not -at least not that I knew of -come in contact with the Mafia For obvious health reasons I don’t go out of my way to cover the Mafia beat Mr Beshears also asked: “Did you get any sweat rags? Those things are too cool” A: Yes I was given a "War The celebration called “Let Freedom Ring” lasts into fall and includes reenactments and 'Special exhibits at many of the historic sites along the trail Fenway Park Built in 1912 the ballpark has nany characteristics that make playing or watching baseball Tthere a unique experience Fans x)ften disrupt 20 or 30 people 'trying to get out of their seat for a trip to the concession stand because the seats are small the aisles are cramped and when you’re packed in like sardines something’s gotta give But speaking as a fan seeing Fenway was a thrill for me - and an even bigger thrill husband for my baseball-lovin- g The building itself looks like a warehouse as you walk up to it Buildings in Boston are crammed together because the city really is quite small and the only reason you can find anything at all is because of the unique architecture Fenway only has that uniqueness on one side so I would have walked right past it if non-spor- ts not for the carnival-lik- e atmosphere outside the park MANY A BODY: Churches and colonial graveyards where vendors whose ancestors sold food there still sell their specialties Despite its age the park is beautiful to see Its though cramped seats and unusual angles make it very distinctive and the chants that rise up occasionally disparaging mostly just Yankee fans add to the competitive spirit It’ll be a shame to see Fenway go despite plans to save such landmarks as the Green Monster - the outfield wall that provides one of the biggest challenges to playing baseball there - and the faqae of the building Tours are available inside Fenway May through September Game tickets generally run about or visit $30 Call (617) 267-17wwwredsoxcom for more information abound throughout Boston (Far left) PaulRevere’s headstone marks the place where he was T-- - — J" i rT---- !
