continuously in the southern illinois conference he enjoyed good health most of the time and says the conference is in a very satisfactory condition provo utah nov NOT 24 As this mornings rio grande western train arrived from salt alt lake susan M me bride the nine year old daughter of mrs annie R mcbride Me Bride died from heart disease mrs mcbride was on here way from salt lake to richfield she has lately arrived from colorado to visit relatives in utah her husband is said to be in arizona it is not known whether the child will be burled buried here G dowe mcquesten a former sat salt laker and assistant clerk cleric of the board of education of this city in 1894 6 and who gave up his residence here for a lucrative position in one of the federal departments at the seat of national government has written an interesting letter to a friend here regarding the return to home and friends after an absence of 47 years of an uncle leroy N mcquesten for thirty years the missing man lad bad maintained a silence as absolute as that of the tomb his return therefore has been made the of rejoicing in n the th family then the fact that he comes back laden with wealth has not lessened the rejoicing with two brothers one of them the father of young mcquesten who resided here he started on gold hunting expedition which covered a long period of years and which extended from california to klondike the two brothers wearied with the pursuit of fickle fortune returned home many years ago but leroy kept on and on in search ot oi wealth till he found it A few feve days ago he turned up in washington in one of the department offices and met Ws bis nephew A A part of the story Is told by the washington ashington post as follows leroy N mcquesten who for ahe the past wt few days has been the guest of Z G dowe mcquesten of new hampshire avenue is one of the returned tur turned nod Klondike rs his adventures reed read like romance at the age of fourteen he became imbued with the gold fever and together with his brother brothe r barsum and two cousins henry W and william started for the new eldorado in california the it little party prospected with varying success for nearly ten years after which henry became disgusted and returned home william and leroy mcquesten continued their search and in 1863 1868 landed in the frazier river country in british columbia here the luck was little better and william left and started back home leroy however had the fever in its worst form and continued the search in 64 he pushed northward into alaska and in addition to placer mining began trading with the indians and miners minera he amassed a considerable fortune and now after an absence of forty seven years will return to his old home in litchfield Litch neld N H it has been over thirty years since any of bin relatives heard from him mr mcquesten to is enthusiastic over the riches of the klondike region he H left the city at 11 yesterday morning for his new hampshire iwane experience and during the last thirteen months presided over the work of the australian group at the regular meeting of the sunday school union board held on the alth of november 1897 elders L john nuttall and james W ure were unanimously sustained as aids to the board this notice is published for the purpose of informing the stake and ward authorities of the action of the board in the zap appointment of these brethren DESERET SUNDAY SCHOOL UNION BOARD the home of frank merrill 65 1 I street was the scene of a burglary early this morning in which the thief proved successful and got away with a plain gold ring and one with an opal setting the burglar got in through the front door toy by applying a skeleton key and made his exit through the back door without disturbing any of the occupants the visitor would like to have taken mr merrills overcoat but finding it too cumbersome he left it on the back doorstep door step considerable excitement was caused by a pistol shot expulsion in a lodging house at the corner of east temple and third south streets shortly after last midnight inquiry elicited th tin inform information ion that the revolver was discharged discharge in the room of A M cannon jr mr cannon says he was handling the weapon somewhat indifferently and that it was exploded the bullet went through the right hand and lodged in the wall A surgeon was called and an examination of the wound madel the injury is a somewhat serious one but complete recovery of the use of the member is expected mt ML pleasant pyramid john 0 jones of this city came in saturday last and reports the particulars of a case which will result in trouble for some one before it is ended mcjones Mr Jones some days ago missed about sheep from his herd which was then on reeder ridge he immediately started in search of them and saturday came upon a band of about that number in emery county in charge of the kofford boys of spring city the sheep had been recently remarked marked re and mr jones was as positive they were the ones he was in search of he came back to mt pleasant secured assistance and went back to begin proceedings to recover them he says he was followed by some one on his journey to this city but who the person was he was unable to say there will be a serious difficulty when the return of the sheep is demanded mount pleasant pyramid the union mercantile co of mount pleasant through a change of the firm name this week is no more in existence andrew madsen and sons having purchased the entire business and stock of the old company and having assumed all responsibility it was deemed advisable that the name of the institution be changed consequently it is now A madsen sons mercantile co the new company was regularly incorporated and ot or tire fire re sounded through our city and when the people rushed out ot oc their houses they could see the heavens the mountains and the valley lighted up for miles around it was the fine large corral of brother richard rowley on fire two barns filled with hay straw and hay stacks outside sheds stables three pigs etc were all consumed in a short timet brother rowley and his wife were not at home having gone to st george and only the children were left they had locked themselves in the house and when the people came and the children saw the fire they were so a frightened they were unable to unlock the door for a considerable time A horse and a number of cows were removed before the fire reached theio the people seeing they could not sava the corral and barns confined them selves to stopping the fire from spread ing further in which they succeeded the origin is unknown this is aba third fire in parowan carowan in the last seven months our grist mill a fine two story frame building not including inc ludins cellar and attic was burned in april last three or four weeks ago william E holyoak had his corrals and stacks of hay and straw burned up we have been singularly tree free from fram fires in our past history and these lata fires work the people up and cadugo baufle considerable talk about having a local insurance company the parties losing by the above named fires hole through his body the bullet however was intended for another man conductor mccauley of the orchestra and was fired by al shaver who mixes drinks at the canteen sw sa loon on commercial street the trouble occurred over shaver attempt ing to instruct the conductor of ahw th orchestra the instruction w was as resented and in a trice there was a regal lax lar razor in de air time Mccau mccauley lew got out of the way just in time to to wi cape being shot but his good fortuna tortuna was dents misfortune the latter r receiving the bullet just below the diaphragm on the left eft side it paw christensen principal of the district schools of this city and his effi efficient clent corps of assistant teachers were giving the public an entertainment in which a large number of students up to the fourth grade took part everything went off smoothly up to the song good night after which came the concluding scene a tableaux representing american industries in which a juvenile god dess of liberty was the central figure in burning the blue fire just inside the stage wing an accident occurred which created the wildest scene ever witnessed here the two men operators of the blue fire were waited upon ty by two of the lady teachers one holding the fizzle powder in a paper near at hand and the other holding a small box containing about a pound of the stuff into which a spark of the fire fell which ignited the tableaux Wo virder and ahe frightened lady dropped the box the extraordinary light created a veritable Teri table stampede of nearly the entire audience of some four hundred men judson H wilkins of washington utah died at thursday of last week she had been ailing for some time being troubled with goitre gaitre her neck being very large which greatly troubled her in breathing her condition growing much worse this fall she prevailed upon her husband to take her north where her relatives resided thinking she would be better with them last wednesday he started with her hop ing the change would help her but the cooler air had a very bad effect upon her and by the time she reached Ka narra in iron county she was taken seriously ill and they were unable to proceed further this was thursday and though everything possible was done to relieve the poor sufferer that evening she literally choked to death she leaves a young babe about six months old west layton lay ton davis co nov 24 1897 1807 people on the sandridge axe are rejoicing over the prospects of a good harvest barvest the coming season as their fall wheat is all allup up and looking well the people of the west correspondent writing from jackson jacl wyoming announces the deal on november 20 1897 of erin mitsn wits Wit sn in sen of Sy lyester and mary wilson aged 32 years 10 months and I 1 day the deceased had been sick ten months and one day and died from the effects of sciatic rheumatism the physician says all of his bones were di 6 bayed but although he suffered terribly all these months he was conscious to the last and never complained rv by frugality and industry he accumulated a large bunch of cattle and houses horses and his ranch is one of the best in the whole jackson country the correspondent says we all miss him he was a good neighbor and an honest man his funeral in spite of stormy weather and bad roads was att attended endea by nearly every |
