milford where I 1 took the train for payson remaining three or four days our company left salt lake city at 7 p m may isih 1896 and arrived ip in chattanooga tano oga tenn at 2 a in on the aoth at our council meeting hold held next day with elders thad W naylor james larsen and samuel C barrell I 1 was appointed to labor in the middle tennessee conference we had lust t time ti enough n 0 u g it to pack our grips and eat our oure dinner i i n a w before train time we were accompanied to nashville by the president of the mission elder elias elas S kimball in company with the other elders I 1 saw the sights at chattanooga and nash ville but as they have been referred to so often I 1 refrain from other than a lo passing assing mention of the same on arriving in my field of labor I 1 was appointed pointed ao to travel with elder W 0 christenson of fairview fan view utah in davidson county here I 1 came in contact with some of th rich men of tennessee who lived in the country near nashville I 1 remained in davidson county about a month when I 1 went to shady grove hickman county tenn where our conference was held june adyth aith and ath 1896 we hica had a time of refreshing indeed the spirit of god resting io in power upon the elders after conference I 1 was appointed to labor in maury county which is said to be the garden soot of tennessee my companion elder joha job a W of la jara colo and 1 I remained in this county until christmas but space will not permit my relating to the many interesting experiences which we mail I 1 had a d during aring i our sojourn a there just before the midwinter holidays we were visited by our conference president joseph 1 C cyoung young and companion and we wa held a series of meetings in our county we then crossed over the line into hickman county where we were met by two new arrivals and their companions woo who came to take them to gieir fields of labor I 1 on christmas day eight of ua us including elder youn r sit sat down to a beautiful luikey butkey dinner at the house bouse of sister M anderson of shady grove sister A is a faithful latter day saint and the elders have had a home with her for many years the first day of january 1897 1 start ed out with elder T W naylor Nayl of salt lake city on a tour through west teen nesse t to 0 visit the elders in their respect I 1 ive ve essie ft ids aids of labor before leaving M maury aury we closed that county coun ty and then after a walk of ninety mites miles we came to elders J H yardley and ole C oleson in brewart county where we found many warm friends as a result of the labors of these elders and ray V wentz of provo utah we then crossed the tennessee river into henry county where we met ra elders H A grover and J J barker whom we found well and enjoying their labors in this county we had quite an experience with a josephite preacher who railed at brigham young and challenged us to a debate on polygamy but after fasting and praying over twenty four hours we felt impre sed to pay no attention to him but go ahead and a preach the gospel gospo we carried out this impression and the spirit of the lord rested in power upon us As a result resul he did himself great damage and mat made I 1 friends for us many of his own flock being impressed with the contrast of the two spirits manifested we next visited elders A F ander son and S F worsley Wo reley in weakley county whom we found d fee feeling ling well I 1 and doing a good wor work while ile in that 9 county lan I 1 was recalled re called to middle tearese Te aoese to join elder young this necessitated my taking a walk alk of miles irom from weakley to io dekalb county elder nay lor or accompanied me as tar far as huntingdon carroll county where we were joined by elders barker and grover the latter bitter remaining with elder naylor nay lor and the former accompanying me into the eastern part of th the state estate after an eventful journey of about ten days we arrived at the home ot of brother J C watson of bozarth Bozar tb dekalb county where we were joined by elder young and companion I 1 traveled with him the pres dent until the day before his return home march 1897 when I 1 went down from nashville to columbia where I 1 met our new president eldr r nels P nel ne 00 ot of spring city utah who came up the north alabama cen terence elder nelson and myself then planned another trip through west Tenness eee upon which we started april and alt we first visited the saints in lawrence where we were met by elders george H huntington and S C bar rell we then continued through wayne and theace ino inlo hardin county inhere bere we met eiders E E brown and 2 L E freeman in mcnairy county we met abet elders W I 1 sloan and S B rush borth and in chester H A G gover over and charles collett we were joined there by elder R G archibald whose com 0 A levanger had just been released to return home in chester county we had bad two applications for baptism wa next visited eders R V wentz and I 1 J L bench in madison county when elder nelson took elder eider bench and returned to middle tennessee tp teake muke arrangements for conference to be held june and Elder Archibald and I 1 assisted elder in holding a series oi of meetings in C madison county where we had two more a applications li co ti is for baptism we then visited alde elders rs W 0 christenson Chrisi enson and 0 C Ole bobin rolland Car carroll and elderia elders A F anderson Aw ferson and S F worsley in weakley V counties we next crossed the ten loemie river into humphreys county where we are now holding a series ct cf meetings unes from here we intend going into kidd e tennessee we found the elders fiddis well and left them enthused with th abe lord eLord we have
