Show missionary WORK IN I 1 ILLINOIS VIENNA johnson county I 1 lanois may 1896 in reading the many interesting articles in your va valuable leable paper from t the bl different elders throughout the world we thought a few lines from this field would be interesting the first elders that hat came in this counte of late years were samuel G spencer now president of the indiana conference and cornelius green fruits of whose good work can be seen on all sides they opened this ibis field about sixteen months ago eide eiders is F M stephenson and thomas W eggett continued the good work till list last january when hen the former was assigned to labor in in massae county along with elder eider C E dinwoodey of salt lake city elder Eg getts new companion was elder F W jones of nephi who ho labored here until april conference when I 1 was assigned to this field with brother eggett prospects in this county are the very brightest in the last three weeks elder spencer has been helping us to hold a series series of meetings du during r in g which time eleven olf of the honest in h heart art have been baptized into the church of jesus christ of latter day saints many more are investigating and we have the best of reason for thinking that others will be added in the near future we have many warm friends in whose hospitable doors are always open to the mormon elders among the many whose kindness the elders will not forget are brother W W betts belts whose famely belong to the church and are faithful members also samuel amley at whose house our headquarters w re many months and the genial charlie wi waight ight and wile wife where our headquarters now are samuel miller willian william brown and many others too numerous to mention we find some difficulty in glatting getting churches or school houses in which to hold meetings but this is overcome by the generosity of many of the people whose houses are always opened for us to hold meetings in until the last school election we have held monthly meetings in the school house of this district but in the words of one of the local preachers the mormons cormons were maturing too fast hence it was closed against us but the good work goes on and what was intended as a hindrance is turning out to be a help As a rule the people are anxious to read our tracts and we are allaying a great deal of prejudice we have had a great deal of rain fall during the last week accompanied by heavy beay winds which have done some damage in many parts ot of the country yow your paper has not been coming to us in the past and we would esteem it a great favor it you would place our names on the subscription list VICTOR E CANDLAND THOMAS W EGGETT |
