Show MORE OF THAT MANIFESTO TUCSON Ar Ariz iiona april since bince the so bo called manifesto was promulgated at the last conference I 1 see with much surprise that some newspapers oppose it even some nominally mormon it would not be strange that nori noc cormons mormons should be hostile to it as they do not understand the spirit of mormonism but that any who claim brotherhood lu in the church should do so la Is strange indeed from newspaper edi editorials toriaN it appears that to them tue time manifesto to ie opposed to individual liberty of action in politics politico that the church does seek to covern in political as aa in ecclesiastical affairs and prohibits men who hold bold leading cill official etal positions in the church from accept ing any other position political or otherwise which would interfere with the proper and complete discharge of ecclesiastical duties 1 without first con suiting the proper authorities to ascertain it if in 10 their opinion lov one maydo may do so go without detriment to the office he already holds this principle la is eminently just and proper would it be wise or profitable to the he public good for or a 8 man who already holds bolus some leading post tion to in the church to accept another office the duties of which would prevent him from fulfilling fulfill ng those these of his present office or calling manifestly no and it there be a doubt as to whether such new office would conflict with the other would it not be deml bently wise and proper to consult with his fellow labor laborers erb it to is an old and a true adage that glin in counsel there Is safety humanity la Is not omniscient but liable to err no one sees a subject from ovary point of view one sees one aide another sees another and a third sees still another by these various views a more just and impartial judgment may be formed as a general rule than from any one per souse sous opinion hence it if there be any doubt there Js Is safety in counsel in may church offices or cai callings linger political office would not conflict in any marked degree and in such cases the principles of the manifesto would not affect the incumbent of such church officer or trouble him at all but it if a man desires another office which would eori conflict flicht with the one he already holds what shall hall be d dc it he is between two stools and can sit on only one oi of then which ishall be chosen Eri evidently dently the one which suits him best so bo with the matter now in consideration if a man values most his bis position in the church let him keep it if a secular OMCO office is more attractive let him take it and resign the other I 1 here refer to positions which plainly conflict in this there it is no compulsion it 16 to is simply a matter of choice for the person concerned and this Is in the rule all over the world nu no officer in the military naval or civil service of any nation may accept an office or engage in any enterprise which would interfere in 10 any degres degree with the proper performance ot of hla his existing exia ting official duties unless authorized zed to do so ao by competent authority presiding ever him in church or state ate to this general rule founded upon good sense and necessity we as aa a poo peo pie cannot catinat object it a mao may hold one position more than he can magnify he may upon the same principle hold boid a dozen and perform the duties of none properly in point of tact our desires often run counter to each other and we nave to choose between them sacrificing the one least desir able I 1 cannot see eee how bow any one who holds the priesthood understands its obligations and expects to receive the bless ings promised through a righteous observance ser varice of 0 its rt quire ments can tor for a moment ont hesitate when confronted by such opposing influences the great object of every man who holds the priesthood should be to fulfill its if obligations gat ions these theme require him to do all the good he be can and evil to none to accomplish the 1116 greatest ghou requires the greatest unity of action to attain this unity we may have to sacrifice some pet ideal aud and we must 10 lo do so in politics as and oftener than in church affairs for ex example ampie buot d a caucus fur the nomination of 01 state senators or presidential candidates hall half a duzan MOD men with their friends to back them strive their utmost for the abe coveted bonol but the a scattering catt ering votes elect nobody and some of the he candidates munk be sacrificed in order to attain a unity men mea give way for the sake ake of party success and do huot think they surrender their agency but regard their course an aa the hi highest ghost exercise thereof shall we be less jew wise than the world let us be willing also adso to surre surrender ii 11 needful used ful our oar ideals that by our unity we may produce the abe greatest good and NAY bay with the father not my will hilj but thine be done and now alter after forty five years experience peri ence in the church I 1 wish to give my testimony teB to the saint balate in that period we have passed through many trying scenes were times time 0 O when it mat bat nothing clothing but toe the power of god goa could preserve us from anniel lation times when nothing but the most consummate wisdom could safely guide us yet never
