| Show A GOOD REPORT PEAKS of otter bedford county august ath 1897 lost last evening we spent the night at mr burkholder Burk bolder between the peaks and this morning at godock called at the ahe mons hotel and were very pleasantly i received by the manager an and d his wife nr mr and mrs A G thompson of new i york our object in in calling was to give for at the peaks chapel in the evening atter alter conversing for a while with the mayor and krosec prosecuting att attorney of bedford city we were invited by the manager to c come 0 me and take supper an and d after spent the night we informed preach preaching ilag him that we traveled as did the ancient apostles without money and preached the gospel without purse or scrip gnp he said that is all right I 1 understand der stand be here at 6 p m as this is the hour hoar we take supper we accepted we the invitation with pleasure and when hand we then the hour came were on preached the gospel and they all seemed well pleased at a m we began to ascend the mountain which is 1500 feet to the top after an hour of hard climbing we found ourselves on to top ot of the peaks which rises aiges to ati an altitude of feet and we could truly say we were above the clouds the pine trees of virginia no longer obstructs our view as has been the case now for or sixteen months we looked do down n on the blue ridge and the rolling hills for miles and the saw mw scene is beautiful tul beyond descar description ani t 1 0 n people come from all parts of the united t ed the peaks and behold states to go 0 on the beautiful Tul ul sunrise in which the sun ap omes comes out of the earth like a antly c ball of fire great thet air is cool and refreshing and puts us in mind ot of the mountains 6 where the pure breezes blow and dear streamlet flow and is pleasant deed alter after suf suffering dufferin ferin ig the intense heat in and woods wood s below we stood tb valley on an a large rock from which through i he agency of man and gun powder a large ta i ocic weighing many tons was loosened from its testing resting place for ages and when I 1 starting it went several miles out in the r valley crushing mighty trees before it A portion of it row now resting in the wash monument D C the price of admission t to 0 the peaks is 50 cents but the manager mr arnold thompson on learning g wat mat we were ministers preach gme the gospel ot of christ and especially from filim utah gave us permission to take io in the views and took pleasure in show free ot of charge ws vs around ling athe lord has blessed us abundantly in our oar labors and much pre prejudice iudice is bt b ine in allayed through the influence of the holy spirit after holding a series of r meetings in in a district and we endeavour to hold them we can we have no trouble in finding friends and instead ot of us ask ift fo for entertainment we have to refuse my invitations at alue ridge spring another pleasure resort and ana mining district we held 10 loran for several days preaching to the miners minem dmd citizens they had been preached to so much that they were al most tired but at the close of our last the following lowing lol expressions could from all sides 1 I am in love aft that at preaching that was the best sermon I 1 ever heard 1 I never herd scripture made so 0 plain be fore etc when we entered the place at first we applied for the church to preach in and were refused but the lord does not give commands unless he prepares prepare pre partS s away a way for the fulfillment there of so we took the matter to him in fasting and prayer and one morning as we were about to leave the neighborhood word came to us that a preacher wanted to see us we went and he granted us the privilege of holding forth form in their place of worship the hall the mr st clair came out to hear us and endorsed all that was said invited us home with him and we spent most of our time with him in one vicinity a methodist church was thrown open to us where we preached for a week with perfect satisfaction passing through there again a month later nothing would do but we mut must preach so we gave out three app appointments and those who opposed us at our former meeting came out to hear us and afterwards took us home with them nothing is too good for a mormon elder after he has been preaching the old time gospel in its purity and many of the people eople say if we cast them out we had beetter better cast our bibles out also the southern states people are kind hearted and especially is that the case in the old dominion state we have plenty ot of opposition for they that live golly godly I 1 in n christ jesus shall suffer persecution but it comes as a rule from clergy freely ye have received full give our conference is taking rapid strides the NEWS is a welcome visitor and brings good news from home we will be pleased to hear bear from our friends at any time R C BUTLER D H SAUNDERS |
