Show DECEMBER 22, 1987 L, Library pioneer (Gibson! visiom By TOM BUSSELBERG Reflex-Journ- al KAYSVILLE Editor - A Davis County library pioneer passed away a few weeks ago. Helen Gibson, who organized the Davis County Library in 1946, saw the system grow to a main library in Farmington and several branches that today is seeing construction of a new Layton library. She had a vision of service. She realized the value of a library in the community, said Jeanne Layton, the woman who suc- ceeded Mrs. Gibson upon her tirement re- in 1970. She strongly believed libraries could improve the individual quality of life while also recognizing the diversity of population living in the county, Ms. Layton continues. She tried to introduce things of a nature that were very high quality that perhaps people wouldnt be exposed to. With a g desire to work as a librarian, she grew up in life-lon- had a of service Ogden with a strong love of books evident in her family. Her career started at the old Ogden Public Library where she served as the childrens librarian. She graduated from the Case Western Reserve University School of Library Science, considered by many as among the nations finest such institutions. Before returning to Utah, Mrs. Gibson was childrens librarian in Cleveland, as well as Seattle, Wash. For more than 10 years, she served as East High Schools librarian in Salt Lake City, reorganized the Murray City Library and organized the Calvin Smith Branch Library of the Salt Lake County System in South Salt Lake. When she took on the task of organizing the Davis County Library in 1946, only Kaysville had a facility that remains independent to this day. Mr. Horsefield has spent most of his life herding sheep on the Nevada dessert. He remembers in 1949 when planes had to fly hay to the sheep because the snow was so deep. Kenneth received his doctor of philosophy degree in chemical engineering and is working with the Environmental Protection Agency in Cary, North Carolina. It finally dawned on her that the youth needed an encyclopedia after he said he wanted to look for some stuff on birds. Her Kaysville home was from the pioneer era but had been remodeled to include todays modem conveniences. In addition to her service on many state, regional and national library association boards, she had a deep interest in animals.
