Show SEPTEMBER 29, 1987 L, Wells leads Uteparade BTU, Weber win Boise State Broncos. The two teams battled on even and with the score shifting from one team to the other until an intercepted pass with 6:41 left in the final period iced the game for the Wildcats. Berk King, a sophomore walkon from Bear River High, turned the momentum of the game to the Cats when he drifted into an open zone on pass defense and then picked off an erratic WSC ahead cross-fiel- d pass and scored a touchdown to put field, just under 40 minutes, while ISUs offensive teams had just over 20 minutes of playing time. By GARY R. BLODGETT Sports Editor Although it was the most lopsided score for Utah since its win over UTEP in 1985, the Utes didnt pour it on. I wanted to prove to everyone and myself that it wasnt a fluke. Yes Virginia, there is a real Rodney Wells. Saturday was a big day for other northern Utah college teams. BYU got back on the winning track and easily defeated New in a Western Athletic Conference 5 Mexico University, win gives them a WAC in The Cougars game Albuquerque. record, but it also gave them great satisfaction. Weber State had its problems in edging a team, in a wild contest played in Ogden; and the Boise State, Utah State Aggies had their first home game of the season in a marred with a 30-- 1 upset at the hands of Cal Pacific Coast Athletic Association game. The loss was the third in a row without a win for USU. Davis County football teams that played games against Bear River High a few years ago remember a little, but talented athlete named Rodney Wells. That youngster, now a freshman at the University of Utah, is fast becoming a household name in the college football ranks as well (no pun intended). 8 and looks d Rodney is only as he breaks from the Ute huddle of giants. At he has a lot of power, and very deceptive speed. Most of all, he has a pair of hands that grasp anything he touches. He seldom drops a Ute pass that is within reaching distance of his short frame. Saturday night he raced for 133 yards on pass receptions including his first collegiate touchdown. He also picked up 15 yards rushing from scrimmage, a total of 148 yards! h Problem is, Rodney is not supposed to be a pass receiver. Hes supposed to be a tailback without a lot of expectations. After all, Rod received the last football scholarship that was offered by Utah for this 1987 season. But he got a chance to play against Wisconsin of the Big Ten and he promptly rushed for 19 yards. With 133 yards in pass receptions against Idaho State last Saturday night, whats left for the mighty little tailback to do as an encore? The Utes did everything that was expected of them in trouncbut very good Idaho State ing the lower division 6 at Rice Stadium. from offensive playing time, to Utah dominated the game total yardage, first downs, passing and even 13 penalties that set the Utes back 140 yards. But the Vikes and Braves still put on a good show during opening action of Region Four volleyball play Thursday. Bountiful emerged 15-- 9 with a 0 victory. The Vikes played without the service of Gayle Wintle, slowed by a foot injury. Still, Viewmont pulled off to a quick 0 lead in game one. But Sue Stahle served three 15-1- 3-- winners for the Braves to knot things up. With the score tied at Bountiful ran off six straight points, as Julie Thornley earned two at serve, including one ace; Lisa Wilkinson and Lori Stacey killed points, and Bountiful kept several rallies alive to take an 1 ll, 1- -5 lead. Game two was also close at the beginning, Bountiful taking a 3 lead on two aces by Stahle and a 5-- great block by Wilkinson and Reading, something they did four times in the second game. But an ace by Sharwan Smith and a nice block by Jeni Squire made it ll once again. Bountiful finally pulled away from a ll tie as Stacey scored on a dink, Wilkinson and Reading blocked another point, Thornley aced and Reading killed another point. Viewmont fought back to 12-- 9 as Bountiful missed a shot and Squire killed a point. But another block, a Viewmont error and an ace by Stahle wrapped up the victory. These two teams have met four times this year, each squad winning twice. We gave up It was very frustrating, and that really hurt us. Our defense on too many big plays offense was inconsistent all afternoon and the specialty teams were good at times and not at others. 16 Despite not scoring their only touchdown until the final seconds on a pass from Brent Snyder to Pat Newman, the Aggies were still in the game (scorewise) until midway through the fourth period. Fullerton scored on six plays with just over 12 minutes left in the final quarter when the Titans recovered a punt return fumble and climaxed the series of plays with a TD pass from Ronnie Barber to Todd White. Coach Shelton praised the Aggies as playing a hard, physicIt bothers me that we can play so physical and still al game. not win. We simply beat ourselves when we make so many mistakes. It was satisfaction for the Cougars because of the fine performance of quarterback Bob Jensen, who was benched last week. Jensen bounced back to connect on 24 of 36 pass attempts for 365 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for a net 89 yards even after being sacked four times for a loss of 36 yards. Holding onto pigskin can mean difference between win and loss By KEITH DUNCAN LAYTON Dependability is the key word when you talk about Laytons running backs these days. The fact the Lancer ball carriers have yet to turn the ball over to the opposition on a fumble in their first five games is quite impressive, and something that coaches like to savor. Between both (Keith) Lawrence and (Tom) Moore, weve been through five games and have yet to lose a fumble to the opposition. In fact theres very few times theyve fumbled at all. Thats amazing and pleasing to me that were not putting the football on the ground, said Tom Moore, Laytons head coach. The backs have had some gaping holes to run through lately and its no secret that if we had a (Richard) Lovelace or (William) Reid around, they may have turned a large gain into a touchdown. But Ill tell you what, the backs weve got now are so dependable that you cant overlook their success. When youve got a Keith Lawrence running the ball 22 times and a Tom Moore carrying it 26 times and even a Sahn Johnson carrying a few more himself and no one is giving the football away, that fact alone makes them extremely valuable to our team. "All of them are very tough kids who play with intensity. No, they arent very fast, at least Lawrence and Moore arent. Hunting last year was excellent for hunters adapting to the Salt Lake diver species and there were relatively few hunters competing for space to hunt. Puddle duck hunters on the other hand found out that the small amount of huntable marshes were quickly over hunted so the ducks moved out fast. Hunters cautioned to hunt with a buddy and be very careful of changing weather conditions as a wind storm can come out of nowhere on a clear day which can be treacherous. All hunters are reminded to respect private property, and to carry a watch with them so they can know the exact time. Shooting begins and ends at a different time each day so hunters need to know what time it is so that a trip to the judge is avoided. Marsh conditions in Davis County are slightly less than was available the same time last year. The Great Salt Lake came up since the last season and killed out additional marsh plants which feed water-fow- l. Even though the lake has dropped to a level lower than last year, there is less food plants to retain migrating waterfowl so it is expected that less ducks will be available for hunters. Hunters can maximize their hunting of ducks in Davis County by changing their techniques from puddle ducks to divers. Diver ducks like redhead, Of course a lot of the credit has to go to the offensive line who are opening up some great big holes for them too. Concentration has been the key to Lawrences success as well as Moores. Both have held onto the ball with amazing durability. We really stress little things like holding onto the football, said Moore, when I send a play in, Im always telling the courier to tell the running backs to hold onto the football with both hands. Fumbles can mean the difference between winning and losing, just ask Bonneville and Highland. (Both those schools fumbled the ball late in their respective games against Layton and both lost because of it.) You also have to like the way our backs are catching the football in key situations. Both Lawrence and Moore have come up with key catches on third or fourth down situations. Their concentration has made them very valuable to us. Lawrence, because of his good arm and his concentration, also is the snapper on extra points and punt plays. Of course when you add Johnson to this tandem, a running back with good speed, Layton's running game deserves all the respect it can handle and then some. instead of payments? nationwide Waterfowl total yards. from the sale of your home?
