Show MARCH 31, 1987 L, '(Cytenapips By Ewe does heir thing agaim Brian Gray We are now only six months away from announcing the winner of the annual Dumb Quote of the Year Award-a- nd several nominations have already piqued my interest. One nomination comes from the normally placid Fruit e area. Two women were taking their daily healthy walk when a Davis County sheriffs deputy drove his patrol car along side of them. The deputy, responding to neighborhood complaints of unethical charity solicitors, meant to quiz the two women as to whether they were the culprits. ..But he phrased his question improperly. Hello, ladies, he said politely. Are you two ladies soliciting? The stunned women finally burst out laughing, then explained to the deputy that they were not ladies of the church-goin- g women out evening, but rather two turned stroll. several shades of red, said for an afternoon ("He one of the women.) The deputys poor choice of words is interesting, but is hardly a Dumb Quote winner when compared to another nomination, a Comment from an inmate at the Davis County Jail. When asked by a reporter what he would do if the sheriff made the jail a inmate facility, the Winston-puffin- g completely let me wont smoke If then here, Id definitely they replied, look for another place to stay. (If hed keep his hands off other peoples property, the inmate would probably have his request granted.) Two nice nominations. ..But nothing to compare to the idiocy emanating from Los Angeles, where a former rock star is winning the California dumb Quote of the Year Award without even a struggle. a blonde Swede known as Peter The rock star is a Holm whose only claim to fame is that he has spent 13 jet-smonths married to Joan Collins', the conniving Alexis Carrington on televisions "Dynasty. His marriage was not spent in poverty, considering that Collins has an estimated income of $400,000 per month, all of which trickled through Peter Holms hands in his duty as Joans business manager. In fact. Holm claims that his astute money management caused now that the two are seking a Collins income to skyrocket--an- d divorce, he wants his wife to pay him alimony. How much? A mere $80,000 per month. And now for Holms Dumb Quote of the Year Award: I do not consider $80,000 per month excessive, he says. It is, in fact, less than what I would legally request and is substantially less than what I need. However, I am prepared to take a temporary drop in my standard of living out of the warmth and compassion I feel for my wife. And he adds that hes making his poverty request of a mere $80,000 per month since he is equal rights. Collins counters that her Swede has already been paid $2 million for his business management and, in the Understatement of the Year Award, her attorney says he thinks $2 million is sufficient for a marriage. Obviously, Utahns cant compete with these type of comments. If a Davis County man is divorced after 13 months of marriage, he doesnt worry about $2 million Money Markets and $80,000 per month alimony payments. ..Hes lucky to escape the marriage with his tool set and his Skil Saw. But if Holm cannot live a decent lifestyle on $80,000 each month (or $2,630 per day), I suggest he move to West Bountiful where living standards are more in line with his income. After a breakfast of bacon and eggs, hed still have $2,626.80 to get by on during the next 24 hours and if he did run low, I know some West Bountiful farmers whod be glad to let him do some tilling for extra pocket money. Wed welcome his money here, says one West Bountiful official. Our women have nicer personalities than Joan Collins and we could steer the poor guy in making some sound investments. We have some beachfront property out here thats quite nice and... As the divorce trial continues, we can expect more Dumb Quote of the Year nominations. In the meantime, continue to continue to have some pass along your local nominations-a- nd sympathy for Joan Collins. she ended up with a She thought she married a Swede-b- ut Swedish meatball. Welling would take advantage of early retirement incentives has lead to much speculation from professional educators and school system patrons. How many professional employees of the Davis District will take early retirement? How will this effect the school system especially on the administrative level? This action was taken at the Board meeting of March 17. Opinion regarding sabbatical leave was divided. Some board members stated they believed this leave is a good thing and it should not be stopped because of tight budgets. Others said it wasn't necessary to take a sabbatical leave in order to obtain an advanced degree. Many teachers use night school and summer school to achieve the same goal. The administration recommended turning down the four requests for this year because of the severe budget constraints. course like a junior college. Associate superintendent in charge of curriculum. Dr. John S. White, has also submitted a letter to the board expressing his intent to apply for early retirement. This will leave two of the districts top posts vacant and there is a possibility that 15 professionals in the central office could retire. In all , Davis District has 256 professional employees who are eligible for the early retirement opportunity including four high school principals, three junior high principals, 16 elementary principals and the 15 central office professionals already mentioned. H.B. 142 stipulates members of the State Retirement System who have 25 or more years of service can retire at any age on a two percent formula with no acturial reduction for early retirement. Employees must apply before June 1 and retire in July, August or September. Once a person has taken the retirement option, he cannot return to work and still accrue service credit. The bill does allow some employees to retire and continue to work until June, 1988 at the employers request. If this is done, no additional service credit can be accrued. It is virtually certain that H.B. 142 will have some effect on every school in Davis District and in the state of Utah. Vocational board meets Bob Thurgood and Louenda Downs cast the Nay votes.
