But most importantly, it is to help students realize that health eating can be fun, and that the word healthy does not mean they will not like it. Research indicates that as much as 35 percent of all cancers may be attributed to diet alone. Research also eating healthier foods might lower the risks of certain cancers because foods, perhaps through their chemical content or the reactions they create during the digestive process, might affect a persons chances of getting cancer. The American Cancer Society On March 28, over 200 hundred schools in Utah wiU arm themselves with weapons known to fight one of the most devastating diseases of our time. Thousands of students statewide will take to the fork, knife, and spoon to combat their risk of developing certain kinds of cancers. Its called Winning with Food Day and the American Cancer Society has enlisted every school district statewide to equip students with an arsenal of foods, including those rich in vitamins A and C, low in fat and high in fiber, as well as cruciferous (cabbage-family- ) vegetables, to use to combat recommends cancer. Tfie menus represent less than 30 percent of calories from fat. inj Winning with Food Day was stituted to educate youth, teachers, parents, and school lunch service personnel about proper diet and high-fib- diets to help avoid colorectal cancer; vitamin A to reduce the risk of developing cancers of the lung, larynx, and diets to esophagus; and low-flower risks for cancers of the breast, prostate, and colon. These recommendations comprise simple, inexpensive, yet delicious changes in eating habits. This years Winning with Food Day marks the fifth year of the project, which originally began in 1991 as the American Cancer Societys Great American Food Fight Against Cancer. The title, which might have evoked a cafeteria food fight, was changed for the schools to create a more positive image. For more information on the American Cancer Societys nutrition program, call primary Children's offers food fitness workshop for family Childrens is sponsoring Primary an eight-wee- k course designed to focus on behavior modification and dietary education. The course is designed for children ages 8 to 17 and their parent(s). During the eight weeks, various topics will be on nutrition and eating habits. Class begins on Thursday, April 11, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The class will be held at Primary Childrens Medical Center, 100 North Medical Drive, discussed SLC. The cost is $95 per family.
