Show The Magna Times STAFF WRITER The Magna Area Council sponsored a logo design contest that would identify the council and also represent of the people, by the people, for the people. The contest winners were announced at the Area Councils March meeting, held at the Magna Library. Ben Barns, a talented junior at Cyprus High, created the new MAC logo design after a friend showed him an article announcing the contest in the Magna Times. Ben has always enjoyed drawing, but around 9th grade he discovered that his talent for art excelled. Under the watchful eye of Cynthia McKay, Ben is gaining a lot of recognition and experience from his designs for the new Cyprus football logo, the school newspaper masthead, and his newest challenge to redesign the Magna billboard located on 21st South at the Magna exit. Ben is the son of Frank and Susan Barns and will be a promising commercial artist in the near future. He received a $50 savings bond, a Grizzlies baseball cap, an athletic bag, and coupons for a free video and donuts. Brad Davies came in a close second place with his design, followed by a tie for third place between a father and daughter, Randy and STAFF WRITER The Magna Area Council had a full agenda for their March meeting at the Magna Library. Mark VanDyke, representing Kennecott Utah Copper, appeared before the council for their approval for a permit to build a 64,000 foot pipeline to create a dual pipeline that will enable KUC to make repairs without interrupting the flow to their tailings pond. They will build the pipeline using rubber pipeline and reinforced concrete. They also have plans to reclaim slopes and restore vegetation. The project will take the latter part of the year to complete. Chad White asked the councils help in his appeal to the county planning committee, which approved his subdivision with an amendment to put in a connecting road to Old Ponds Road and move telephone poles for them. The council agreed the connecting road would be detrimental to the project. The council also agreed to make Welker Park their priority request of County parks and recreation. 30-l- Dub Richards presented FortLight Foundations hopes of using all or part of Webster School to house sliding-fe- e daycare for working families, a shelter for battered MACNA AREA COUNCIL Debra Linschoten.
