Ambrose Bierce You really have to be a good athlete to make it through the Fourth of July. Hey, its tough out there. Every year I start out the holiday at the Lions Club breakfast. The line heading to the eggs and hotcakes can be a tough obstacle. Not everyone survives. You have to be stronger than the guy behind you or hell muscle you out of there. It takes a lot of quickness to be a successful athlete at the Lions Club food fest. The flies are quick and youve got to beat them to the food. Sometimes while youre taking a bite of ham, they practice their backstroke in your hotcake syrup. the flies, I opted for the parade and took up a spot After trying to on the north side of Main at 8700 West. I have stood there to watch the horses and fire engines for the last 50 years. The parade started at 12 noon. I staked my claim to a couple of yards of curb at about 1 1. At five to 12, some feminine Amazon knocked me off my perch and back five yards into a barbed wire fence. I tried to fight back and hold my spot, but the large lady outweighed me by 30 pounds. She was jerking a along with her left hand. That left her right hand free to hustle herself a spot next to the road. She used those massive hips to get some leverage and then hit me under the chin with a forearm to finish the job. I climbed the tree to see the parade. out-qui- Mark Holland, Kirk Zauder, and Chris Yorges take a breather while photographer takes their picture. In the afternoon, we took our lunch and went to Magna Park. We found some shade and threw down a couple of blankets. The shade was good and so was the lunch. Things went well until we decided to get some drinks from the snack bar. My son and I were second in line when the two motorcycles pulled up. Two guys in tank tops, with dark glasses and enough muscles to give some away, moved in front of us and ordered. It was a gutsy move. My son gave me a strange look, so I acted like I had dropped some money on the ground and got in line behind the motorcycle club. What the heck. They werent going to run out of drinks. While waiting, I practiced some athletic skills, like patience, self control, disgression, and humility. We took the drinks triumphantly back to the shade and later, when my son had left, I told my wife how I had outsmarted the motorcycle gang. She was proud of me for standing up to them and patted me on the leg. In the cool of the evening, we found us a good spot in deep right field to watch the fireworks. By this time of night I was tired of the events of the day. Being a constant athlete is wearing even to the big and strong. Dusk is a wonderful time of day, and we were enjoying it. Suddenly it seemed that every urchin in town had us surrounded.
