Case Magna Times Feature Writer I ? I X I V, 4 I &ii-- lyte S July 4th came and went without me again this year, or so I thought. Each year over this holiday, my mothers side of the family attends a reunion along the Skyline Drive up Fairview Canyon. I say the 4th came and went without me because my family and I dont see any of the firework spectaculars that are so hotly advertised two weeks prior to the event. Ive always wondered just how spectacular they really are. Well, this year, I learned a valuable lesson. Each year we have a patriotic program at the reunion, with the splendid Manti-LaSForest as the scenic backdrop for the stage. This year, our program was about the Bill of Rights. I believe I learned more about the Bill of Rights that day than I did in my history classes. I also learned that our forefathers fought long and hard to guarantee the rights that we take for granted so easily ... something I always knew but didnt pay a lot of attention to. Rights we take for granted, like traveling two blocks to go to a grocery store with food actually on the shelves. The right for we as Magna residents to rights we take for granted are guaranteed to us by the Bill of Rights. Stories were read about the kangaroo courts that governed the land. One man was sentenced to jail for taking his hat off in court when told to. It seemed the judge didnt much like the gentleman appearing before him. The man took his hat off when it was customary and this angered the judge. So, the judge instructed him to place his hat atop his head once more. The man did just that, and the judge then accused him of wrongdoing for wearing the hat and sentenced him to jail. They are raising funds towards a van to be used for functions sponsored by the Magna Senior Citizens Center. The $5000 they are to raise will be matched with $20,000 from a government grant to purchase the van. Magna Water halfway to goal We were delighted with the sale, said Jean Orton, director of the center. It was the largest sale they have had since they earned approximately $400 from their first sale five years ago, Orton said. Continued from page 1 the projected $407,000 is needed. My recommendation is to take what we need because that is in the public in- terest, Sims said. the :5 million The refurbishing-O8400 on West and gallon reservoir 4100 South will be completed on Friday and will be servicable a week from f then. but illustrates my point, that poing being, while the spectacular firework displays, parades, and other celebrations are going on, lets not forget the real reasons for the celebration. Rights of freedom, liberty, and justice for all comes to mind. In the canyons, you are away from all this type of glory and have an excellent opportunity to reflect on what we really celebrate when the Fourth of July comes about. These patriotic programs have brought to my mind some very important rights of American life that other countries dont share. These aspects wouldnt have come to mind watching a firework display. So, the Fourth of July really didnt pass me by as I thought in years past and I now understand that part of the reason my family reunion is my favorite vacation of the year is because of these programs.
