The teen years can be lots of fun, but there are also real pressures for instance, pressure of sexually suggestive material. Movies, magazines, and rock music give direct messages (some are just plain crude) about sex ' " do it, its fun, it feels good. Is it any wonder that teens feel pressured to have sex, and any wonder so many of them do? Unfortunately, its pretty common for teens to submit to the pressure of e x this orj moment, youre reading and enjojinp while you pet information and entertainment. Especially in the early teens, kids dont want to appear different. They need to lean and practice the skills needed to stand up for themselves. Negative peer pressure is a major reason teens do things they know they ' shouldnt. Weve heard a lot about how teens .should just say no. Face it, its hard for many of us adults to say no. Sometimes we feel like we just cant say no, even when we should. Its not easy for teenagers, either. It can be harder for them because fitting in and being accepted are especially important at their stage of life. For teens to be able to say no to early sexual involvement they need effective skills. Others may interpret an unconvincing or weakly spoken no as a yes. HOW they say no is important. Help them practice these skills: 1 . Face the . person. Body language is important. 2. Look the person in the eyes. Looking at the person adds conviction. 3. Use a calm, but serious voice. This communicates control. 4. Begin with a positive. Others react more favorably to you when you are positive. I really like you, but ... 5. Say no. State how you really feel. I really like you, but no. I dont feel right about this. 6. Suggest alternatives. Making a suggestion gives both of you a way out, without losing face. I really like you, but I dont want to get involved with sex. Lets go ... 7. Repeat "no if necessary. The most important skill here is to hold to your value. Dont be worn down. When its really important to you, you cant let someone else make your decision. Like any skill, assertiveness gets better with practice. Practive assertiveness skills with your teens. You say the lines that someone might use to try to get them to have sex. Help them prepare an assertive response. Tell your teens you know that they will have sexual feelings. Talk about why it is important that they say no to having sexual intercourse for now. Talk with your teens about what ways of displaying physical affection are acceptable to you and under what conditions. could command that kind ol attention Irom'their listeners l$ut. too many times, radio and television commetcials liecome little mine that hackpround noise.
