Chris dishes it out and Ev takes it ... in basketball, that is. You see, Chris Matagi prefers to share the wealth. As an example of his unselfishness, Matagi broke a Cyprus assist record by handing out 16 to brother Ev, Cade Osborn, Cory Barrett, Jason VanTassell, Matt Brimhall, and Matt Jones during the Bingham-Cypru- s shootout. Thats because Matagi, although an excellent medium range shooter with speed as well, prefers to subordinate his shooting opportunities for the sake of his teammates which has translated into a dozen wins for coach Mark Wilsons varsity Pirates this season. And what makes Chris Matagis performance so impressive is the fact that many of his assists aren't in the gimme category. With his speed, quickness, and ability to penetrate the key, Matagi creates easy scoring opportunities for his teammates with moves, while his leaping tough and exceptional body control ability allows him to put the ball in the hoop just when the defense is anticipating a pass. Part of Cyprus guard foursome of Jason VanTassell, Cade Osborn, and Cory Barrett, Matagi mirrors the talents of each with his own. For example, he has Osborns quickness, ability to shoot and handle the ball, or make a big play on offense or defense. He has Jason VanTasselis stubborn tenacity and three point shooting eye (though he It was announced Monday, March 1 , that Cyprus Pirate point guard Cade Osborn has been named to the 4A "'f J'v team. Osborn, who averaged 22.5 points per game in the regular season and 17.5 in the state 4A tournament playoffs is one of only two Region Three basketball players to make the ten man roster. Brian Kelley of Hillcrest was also chosen. His phenomenal broken field running in football frequently turned short yardage situations into big gainers. Using that same speed and ability to anchor the fast break, Chris Matagi has proven to be a game breaker for the Pirates. A high percentage shooter, Matagi matches his consistency from the field with a solid performance at the free throw line, converting most of his charities, particularly in crucial situations. And, as might be expected, Matagi is among the leaders statistically for Cyprus in steals and forcing turnovers using his hustle and quickness to continually pressure the ball. Additionally, Chris provides poise and leadership on the court, continually exhorting his teammates to maintain a high level of intensity in their play. Chris Matagi is a complete player, solid on both offense and defense and a popular leader on a team blessed with an abundance of desire, an intangible though vital ingredient in the recipe of success that continues to make the often under-rate- d Pirates a dangerous opponent regardless of the presumed stature of their opposition. Coach Adams said, I feel positive about the season. Although we had a slump during the second round of region play, weve been able to rise from it to put in some great and shooting percentages during the more recent games. She continued, Although I have mixed feelings about losing my sophomores. Im extremely encouraged and excited about the freshmen talent we had this year, anc am looking forward to next year. free-thro- w We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Too bad all our games Book of Hag are played inside. I have just finished watching the 3A and 4A state tournaments. The three point shot was very much in evidence. Games were won and lost by the use and misuse of the three. The three point shot has changed the game of basketball. Me thinks the shot too easy. The distance isnt all that great, but I dont want to talk about that. I do want to mention how many threes I saw. They were ubiquitous. Seems that every team was dropping them through the nets. Al McGuire, a former successful coach and presently a basketball analyst, said he if were coaching now he would shoot the three point shot 90 percent of the time. That may be a little strong, Al, but your idea does have some merit. Certainly the logistics are there. Three beats two any time. Even new math will teach you a winner. Some teams have that. Make enough threes and youre home free last done well with it. Consider years Loyola Marymount or this years Kentucky Wildcats. They did it, and well. They hit the threes; big winners by making the big threes. The trouble with the three is you have to make it. Miss it and trouble starts. It seems the threes that dont go down tend to give the long rebound. The long rebound usually results in the fast break basket on the other end, so dont miss em if you shoot em. We were playing Cottonwood a couple of years ago and they had this outside threes when we went to their place. shooter named Henshen. He hit nine of We lost, of course. Later they stopped by our gym. The same guy missed the threes and we thumped them bad. Thats how the three goes. It helps and it hurts. Were all good coaches when the three goes down. The three has changed the game.
