Autologous blood donation allows a person to donate his or her own blood for use during surgery, if necessary, or for use during the postoperative recovery period. Because a person donates his or her own blood, autologous blood products are the safest available for transfusions, and for two primary reasons: first, autologous blood carries no risk of transfusion-associate- d diseases, such as AIDS or hepatitis; and second, it has no risk of allergic or other transfusion reactions. In the early to when the AIDS virus began reaching epidemic pfoportiorts in the United States, autologous.blood donation gained momentum because of the widespread fear of contracting the AIDS virus through transfusion. Still, even with the continuing improvement of tests to screen donated blood, autologous blood donation remains a safe and reliable option to Limit receiving volunteer blood prior to surgery. Autologous blood donation ensures that any Jblood'products you may need wilt be free of risk, will be compatible in blood type, and will be readily available for use ,whea needed. If not used immediately, blood products can be refrigerated for 42 days in a liquid form for future use. The plasma portion of blood can be frozen and then used up to three years after the blood has been donated. Rare blood can be donated and frozen for an indefinite period. There are several ways to donate autologous blood: before, during, or following surgery. Predeposit autologous blood donation is the most common form and involves the donation and storage of ones blood prior to surgery. Not everyone is a candidate for autologous blood donation. A persons medical condition is the key criterion to determining whether he or she is eligible. Your personal physician will be able to determine whether you can donate safely. The number of blood units that will be required for your operation will be determined by your surgeon. You may only need to donate the minimum of two units, since many elective procedures dont need blood during the procedure. If you do need to donate more than two units, you can take iron supplements to replace the iron lost with each donation. The frequency with which you can donate depends upon time your physical donation and the the and between your first donation donations date of your surgery. All must be made within a maximum of 42 days to a minimum of three days 1 $6.25 per ton for commercial haulers, up from $6 per ton where it has been since 1986. Mid-Atlan- tic The over 1,200 songwriters submitted over 2,500 songs from throughout the country and from some foreign countries. All were competing for the grand prize of $ 1 ,000 and a trip to New York. They competed in ten different categories from pop to folk. With Magnas annual 4th of July just around the comer, two teenage girls, Cassie Nelson and Debra Linschoten, wanted to insure a successful day. Eac-!- y Saturday morning, Cassie and Debra could be seen pulling weeds, sweeping up broken glass, and picking up garbage along Magnas Main Street, between the senior citizen center and Dyches Pharmacy. They were joined by their MIA maid leader, Kathy Purser, and together they filled up two 33 gal. sized garbage bags before the heat forced them to quit. Cassie will be participating with the Cyprus marching band, playing a flute in the parade. Debra wanted to help change old Magnas image and let people know she takes pride in her community. If everyone in Magna would take an evening walk and pick up just a grocery sack of weeds and garbage, we could be known as a pretty neat place to visit and live in, stated the girls. The ten finalists competed on July at the Stauffer Concourse Hotel Grant Ballroom. The evening was attended by 300 black tie guests, made up from writers and music people from around the country. v , fTtf .s and Cassie Nelson and Debra Linschoten do some clean-u- p Parade, of 4th for the to Main Street July prepare weeding on Magna A 1 Kristyn Osborn, a 1988 graduate of Cyprus High School, was the country music category winner with her song, My Heart Beats for You.
