Show (. Scrai?book I M M H II I ! ' ,,,,,,,,, Thursday, July 7, 1983Magna 3 Tlmes-Pag- e Mrs. Utah There is magic in the air in Sanpete Valley in Utah that begins around the end of May, when Mormon Miracle Pageunt Director Macksene Rux of Salt Lake City arrives to hold Salt Creek Canyon from Nephi to Moroni. And as we watched the water rise above the road level around the Freeway south of Provo, we wondered what it would have been like had all the water impounded behind the Thistle Dam run freely into Utah Lake. But there was no question among pageant officials if the pageant would be held. Those in charge were certain that even though it may take a little longer, that Highway 132 could handle traffic from the north, and those coming from the south amid easily access highway 89 at Salina and come north to Gunnison, and then up to Manti. We have worried a little too, as local flooding has caused mudslides in the canyons, and eroded many canyon roads, so that camping there is inaccessible. But those ' associated with the pageant are moving ahead. Casting has been completed. The next three weeks will be spent polishing and perfecting the actions and drama of the pageant. Mrs. Rux has assured us that those who sought parts in the pageant were a dedicated and enthusiastic, wonderful group. And she adds to that her own enthusiasm, which demands excellence because of her professional training; and expects great understanding of the parts being portrayed, because of her own ancestral ties with the characters in the pageant. A large group of hopefuls turned out for the and these same young people spent many hours filling sandbags to be ready for the high water expected from the nearby canyons. And when the high water came, city officials, with the help of many volunteers, were ready. And try-ou- ts for each years mid-Julproduction The magic lasts all through rehearsals in June and the forepart of July, and then grows and swells in great proportions all through the Pageant y presentation. This, year that will be July 14, 15, and 16, skipping Sunday and Monday to begin again on July 19, and lasting through the July 23. ( It doesnt just end when the Pageant is over, but after those steady nights of being up late and giving full support to all that has made. the Mormon Miracle Pageant a success for seventeen years, the magic will gradually fade away, until by the time everyone is rested, it will be gone, and no one can say for sure that it has been there. Nineteen eighty three will be remembered, a little differently by those associated with the pageant. For those of us who do publicity, it will be remembered as the year of flooding, with many counties in Utah being declared disaster areas. We were in Boise, Idaho, in April when we learned e of the giant in Spanish Fork Canyon that buried the little railroad town of Thistle and shut off traffic on mud-slid- U.S. Highways 6 and 50 east and west, and U.S. 89 north and south; as well as severing all connections on the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. It seemed incomprehensible to us - that is theway we always travelled, and as the weeks went by and we learned of the lake being formed behind the mudslide, now called Lake Thistle, we knew our way to Ephraim and Manti in Sanpete Valley wouldhave to follow the original pioneer route through try-out- s, 5J Alioao Applause 2 comes from the kitchen of Mrs. Beth FRUIT PATIO PLATTER unflavored gelatin our recipe envelope Knox cold c. 1 y ANNIE MAC KAY PATTERSON ofloa Head Librarian Magna Branch Library .Who will she be? His latest novel is titled ASCENT INTO HELL.This is the story of a Roman Catholic priest who tries very hard to live up to his vows and live without women but he finds it impossible. Father Donlons fall from grace begins when he impregnates a nun, turns his back on the church and reenters the secular world as a commodities trader. His fall is more like a plunge as he become involved with the wife and daughter of a competitor who deliberately sets out to ruin him. Near the end of this dramatic story Donlon is faced with the dilemma : whether to return to the active priesthood or to claim the woman he has always loved. Winston Graham has been entertaining readers for four decades and has won many followers with his POLDARK series. Now, in the ninth one of those Poldark novels, Mr. Graham takes his readers back to the rugged, windswept Cornwall territory whose coast has become his own fictional setting. In THE MILLERS DANCE, the author concentrates on the lives and complicated love affairs of the two oldest Poldark children, Jeremy and Clowance, rather than on the parents, Ross and Demelza. Jeremy and Clowance must find their own solutions to the frustrations of unrequited love, fluctuating morality, financial upheaval and an emerging new social order. Only the reader who has followed the Poldark on T.V., and in novels will really want to read THE MILLERS DANCE. Are you going to Europe this summer? No one gets paid money for working with the Mormon Miracle Pageant. AU donate their time and talents. Even the professionals at Bonneville national Studios freely contributed in 1970, to make the sound trade which now accompanies the pageant. More volunteers are setting up exhibits to display tenets of the Mormon faith; others assist in foreign languages for those who do not speak English; still others direct traffic and assist those who come to find comfortable seating with their groups. Meals are prepared by volunteer groups from Manti, and Ephraim volunteers provide fast food service at the pageant site. The story of the pageant is tied closely to the history of the Mormon people and is a story of faith and human tragedy; of the reliance of a homeless people on their Lord, who has forever directed the affairs of the lands of America. It tells of dire consequences when ancient peoples turned away from their God; and it tells of triumph in the midst of tribulation when they have proved faithful. As we count our blessings in 1983 that it wiU again be possible to present this modern witness for Christ, the Mormon Miracle pageant, as it is dramatically and majestically por-- . trayed on the south slope of the hill where stands the magnificent Manti LD.S.
