Over 2000 Kennecott workers were laid off when the other countries became cheaper to buy than the U.S. copper. SOHIO officials have stated that the laid off workers will not be called back until the company has men retire or quit, then one at a time the workers will be called back. At this rate many of the men feel they will never be called back. There is a program that many of the former Kennecott workers are working in now. The program is through the Job Service government help. When the workers are laid off because they lost their job due to foreign competition, they can go to school to get new job training, to support their families.-Th- e government.pays unemployment benefits toJthe workers while they attend school. Mr. Lynn Andreason and his family, of Magna, are just part of the laid off Kennecott work force. What happens to a family afer Kennecott? Lynn had heard the rumors at work for several weeks and when he went to apply for jobs, there were several of his fellow workers and men who had been laid off earlier ahead of him. So Jackie, his wife, found a job to start to get ready for the up coming lay offs. A lot of changes have to take place when a family goes from a good salary to unemployment. Its hard work, Jackie stated, but you just start all over again. Many of our friends have had to sell their houses, and cars. Lynn goes to school from 7 until 12:30. Then he gets the children from the bady sitters and goes home to study until Jackie gets home from work at 6 p.m. The Andreasons have four children, Jenny, Steven, DeAnn, and Becky. Lynn still has another year of school left before he can enter the job market with a different skill. Many of the men feel they left Kennecott without training for any other job or skill. Thats what you do is start over. We all have families to support and take care of. There is no way you can just sit back and give up. I guess we never stopped to think about what life would be like without Kennecott.
