On Expressway there is a Phillips Petroleum Refinery. Wedged between the roaring freeway and the smoking refinery is a mobile home park. The first time I noticed it I could hardly believe my eyes. Immediately I thought that Salt Lake County is not the only place which has trouble finding a spot for mobile home park development. These planners and zoners obviously have a strange idea of a balanced, pleasant community. No one deserves to live in a location like that yet there are a number of residents. Once again the planners did no one any favors when they zoned a mobile home park there. With all the uproar about low income housing, mobile home parks and renters I feel compelled to speak out. I am a renter. I cannot afford to buy my own home just yet. During my college days I was also forced to rent. But I do not consider myself a bad neighbor. I am concerned about my community, I try to campaign for what is best for it. I do not vandalize or steal property. Furthermore I once lived in a mobile home. My mom and I moved there after dad passed away. It was more convenient, required little upkeep and yes, it was less expensive. My mom lives in a very pleasant park compared to what I see on Wednesdays along Renters have rights too and it is a mistake to lump them all into one category. The planners and zoners should keep that in mind when they decide where to put mobile home parks. And everyone should keep that in mind when they think about renters. Many of us are very thankful there is such a thing as low income housing but that does not necessarily mean we are criminals or deserve to be stuck beside an oil refinery and a busy freeway. Dorothy Grandparents, and Jim Russell havent descended back to earth again since they got the news early in the morning of July 4th. Great Grandma Allcock is also pretty happy about the whole thing even if Cadi is her sixth and Aunt Julie is busy making plans to get to Seattle too! Dorothy and I of course are neophytes at being grandparents but I can hardly wait until the first time Cadi says, Grandpa" or anything even similar Dorothy cant wait. She is flying to Seattle Thursday morning to see her. Ill have to wait for vacation the first part of August before I go up. In the meantime, however, Mike and Sharon are taking pictures to keep grandpa Jim, thats me, happy. I spent the better part of July 4th in Magna, first helping the Lions with the annual chuck wagon breakfast. As is usual, a fine turn out took advantage of the breakfast, and that turn out again featured Governor and Mrs. Scott M. Matheson. The Governor hasnt missed a Magna July 4th celebratjpn since I have been out here. Paul Garside and I cooked hash brown potatoes again as we have other years, and Dear Editor, This past weekend has given much time for thought. As a child and teenager the 4th of July had great meaning to me. Our streets were lined with Old Glory. When the topic of the United States of America came up, one swelled with pride, eyes swelled with tears and we would give up our lives to preserve this fine land. Last week was the 4th of July and only six flags were displayed on 5400 South. I am speaking of a well populated area of two and one-hamiles. Two hundred and forty-seve- n days ago American hostages were taken in Iran. They still sit or lay there seemingly deserted by their American country. Our flag has been torn, sliced, walked on, and burned before our eyes and we did nothing. Old Glory, Dont Tread on Me, America The Beautiful, Land of the Free, Home of the Brave, etc. Where has it all gone? We are all so so sanctimonious and yet look at the last few years of our country. 1. The Pueblo, 2. Three assassinations, 3. The Panama Canal give away, 4. Vietnam, 5. Watergate, Americans can not even find time to vote. We as Americans can NOT even spend $5 for a wire to President Carter to voice our wants in OUR country. We sit by and let our country go to the dogs. What a slap in the face to our forefathers who gave us our Constitution of the United States or to our relatives who died in battle so that we may have this fine land and government today. So, we just sit back and let some fat cats in Washington screw up this country while we hide our heads in the sand. We need not spend money on defense items nor do we need an army to defend us against other nations. The way we are going, we will destroy ourselves in only a few more years. We are letting other countries walk on us while we pay them to develop stronger arms against us. We are even starving our Golden Agers with pennies from Social Security so that we can pay physically fit freeloaders who come from generations of welfare freeloaders. Of course we have those who really need temporary help, but the red tape does not work for those who are on their feet most of the time. We do help those who put the government over 6. Iran, for millions of dollars. 7. Cuba etc., etc., etc., We tax the homeowner We as lovers of a fine who keeps up and improves America can not even make his property to the limit our voices heard in while the neighbor who has a We as yard and home that looks Washington. lf s, For the price of a postage stamp, find out what you can do about one of this countrys most pressing problems. I understand the fireworks were the best ever and that the rest of the day was extremely enjoyable for all. The Spinnakers did an excellent job both in the parade and their exhibition. They also sold about everything they had to sell in the line of food during the day. Lori Lambros and the girls do an excellent job. Much credit must go to Mr. and Mrs. Francis Prentice and their helpers for making the food sale a success. All in all the Fourth of July committee did their usual excellent job for the finest 4th of July possible. Russells Rustlins: If you cant win make the guy ahead of you break a record. Have a good week. much like the city dump pays very little in tax dollars. We spend over 100 days to plan a rescue mission in Iran with our BEST HEADS IN WASHINGTON only to flub out. For the grand old dollar, illegal aliens were extorted and dumped in the desert to die. We pay more tax dollars for more man power and that same nfan power from the top on down always has their hand out for more money, yet these gross boo boos happen over and over again. We do, however, tell other nations that they are wrong, bad and not as humane as we are. We shot to kill, even if it is the wrong person. We kill a man who tries to educate his own children in a moral manner. We have, become a joke that isn't funny. Why worry and spend money to defend ourselves against other nations when we are doing a good job of destroying ourselves. Those boys and men who went to Vietnam, some injured, are not even being taken care of by the government who sent them there. They are not treated as the W.W. II vet was. Some of them went to war trusting in the government that made this a free nation and we (we are our government) walked out on them when they needed us the most. Yes, we are the government even if we dont vote, even if we dont write letters, even if we dont own or display a flag and the one BIG message we are sending to our leaders in Washington and seers in other countries is that WE AGREE with it all. After all, we are silent and our silence says its okay with us. Yes, we pay our tax dollars and call ourselves AMERICAN, but what have we done to add to its glory, greatness or to give it pride again? Each one of us is AMERICA. Are we cashing in on our share of OLD GLORY now and running like a coward? Oh, you are too busy with the kids, church, business, etc. And when your children or grandchildren ask why we no longer have a free, and proud nation, will you hold your head up proudly and say, I was really busy with the kids, church and work. I meant to get involved but never had time. Do you own even a $1 flag that you hang proudly in silent support of your freedom or in respect of those hostages? Do you even remember the hostages in your prayers? Editor, I hope that at least someone out there will read this and try harder to help our America to grow and become a better place. I know my feelings are not only mine A DAMNED PROUD AMERICAN WHO IS APIECE OF AMERICA TOO Jim and Genii is one of the entertainment many features the Magna Library, 8339 West 2700 South, has lined up for the next few days. Patterson Hi, Its nice having two holidays during the month of July. Magna is a fun little town on the Fourth of July. The fire works were worth waiting for and breakfast outside in the park is always fun, plus a parade. Do you need the ultimate manual for dog training? Does your dog have some bad habits youd like to break? Jo and Paul Loeb have written a new book, SUPERTRAINING YOUR DOG which helps you to teach your dog obedience and aids you in perfecting your pets behavior. If you are planning on giving your child a dog read how experts select a new puppy for health, temperament and personality. As this book demonstrates, training will not break your dogs spirit but will make him, (or her), a better pet and give him, (or her,) a comfortable sense of security. It is much easier on you and your dog if you start out correctly. Some 30 years ago, near Nag Hammadi in upper Egyptian desert, an Arab peasant made an exciting discovery. In an ancient earthenware jug he found 52 papyrus texts, some dating as far back as the beginning of the Christian era. These were probably written during the period when the New Testament gospels themselves were written. Now after years of scholarly investigation and analysis, the Nag Hammadi texts have turned out to be among the most outstanding archeological discoveries of modern time. This book. THE GNOSTIC GOSPELS by Professor Pagels, a distinguished historian of religion, is the first account written by a scholar for the general public about these profoundly revealing documents. Not since Edmund Wilsons account of the Dead Sea Scrolls has the general reader been offered such illuminating study of the roots of western religion. at-ho- Continued From Page 1 Hunter Council-- 44,s Back your candidates," Lobato we have to push somebody from west valley, The Granger-Hunte- r Improvement District is being pushed to do something about replacing a fire hydrant discussed at the last Council meeting. I had visited Salt Lake City a few times prior to my move so I knew something about the area. I cant say there were any drastic surprises as I settled in but it certainly was a different lifestyle for me. I felt that I had finally found my career nitch in life. After having spent some approximately 20 years in an office, much of that time behind a typewriter, I had decided it was time to career switch. Along the line I had been make a mid-lif- e subtle signals pointing me towards this line of work getting but Id not been able to really pursue it. I thought it might be something I would like, that I just possibly could make a living at it, but I was still timidly hesitant. My personal life changed and along with that came long periods of introspection. I began to seriously think about what I wanted out of life. Gathering up all of the courage I could find I decided it was now or never, I was going for broke. Something inside of me said, youve got to try it. So try it I have. I threw everything I had into my new venture and found real happiness. It was scary, I had doubts, I wasnt sure I had what it took, but I knew that I had to try anyway. And what did all of this do for me? It gave me a marIt gave me confidence I didnt velous sense of think Id find again. It gave me an insight into talents I didnt' know I possessed. It gave me a whole new life, more beautiful than I had dreamed possible. So whats the point? Well, if I can do it you can too. Challenges that face you may not be as drastic as those faced a year ago. Maybe you just have a small challenge youre scared to tackle. But I learned that if I didnt try then I would have never known the joy of discovery, of knowing that 1 can succeed.
